buying a car from interstate

Hey guys just a quick question. I'm planning on buying a car from a private seller from nsw and i'm from vic. Do I have to get the name transferred in nsw or can I do it in vic? Thanks guys! :thumbsup:

aslong as you have the rego papers to transfer the name youll be right

id get the seller to write out a receipt with the vin number/kms etc on it jsut to be sure as well

The process that I went through was I drove the car back to Victoria, register it in Victoria and then Vicroads notify NSW that it has been re-registered. You'll need to do rwc before registering at Vicroads. If there's any balance of rego from NSW, they'll refund you with a cheque.

Cool thanks for the replies! So when I buy the car I just get the rego papers off him and some type of written receipt? Sorry I've never purchased a car from a private seller so I have no idea!

ring your main roads place eg(vic road) (nsw roads) or queensland transport. ring your state roads and they will tell you everything. i bought my car from vic drove it home and had to get a saftey cert up here and all i needed was a full written receipt from the seller as proof of purchase. just make the call and be sure to do a revs check.

How much did it cost you to register the vehicle in vic? Using the vicroads fee calculator, it's showing me around $1500 to register the vehicle including

get a receipt from the seller, and do a new registration in nsw (incl. your green and pink slips).
