Just wondering if the clutch is the same for hydro gb and cable gb.
Mate doing a conversion into his civic ED, his got the gb but the the d16y1 motor still has the clutch, is it the same or different?

Interesting question, only because I'm doing the same thing: putting a D16Y1 SOHC VTEC engine into an 1991 ED Civic Hatchback, using the original cable L3 transmission.

The original engine, probably a D15B4, uses a cable gearbox, the L3. Now the first thing you have to know (and it was hinted at in another post) is that there are two types of gearbox using the cable operation.

The first one uses an input shaft spline of 21 teeth. This came in the earlier iteration of the ED, from 1988 to 1989. The second one came with an input shaft spline of 20 teeth.

I have the 21 spline box, it's from an EF Si, and has a 4.25:1 final drive (diff).

If you are going to use your original gearbox determine whether it has 20 or 21 spline. I used a marker pen and did a simple count 'round.

If you have 20 then you can use your D16Y1 clutch kit; if you have 21 then you need to buy a new clutch kit (EXEDY HCK-6894). The only difference between the two clutches is the Release Bearing and the Clutch Disc. The spigot bush, and cover assembly are the same.

You can't use the D16Y1 gearbox as it's hydraulic, unless you do a conversion but that's basically a waste of time and money.

Also, you can't mix and match parts - gearbox, flywheel or clutch. Use the same set throughout.

Here's some resources you might find useful:

Good luck.

BTW, I'd be interested in your progress with this conversion especially the wiring up of the engine. I assume you'll use the P28 ECU that came with the D16Y1?
