checked the tread on my rear wheels today and the inside is worn from camber to the extent where i can see a white string thing. what is this ?
im going to get my new wheels put on tomorow.
current ones are 225/40/r18 on 18x8.5" wheels
would i be able to use this same profile on 18x8.0" ?
what im wanting to do is to move my current ones to the rear of the new wheels and just get 2 new tyres for the front.
also, will raising the car a bit reduce camber for the mean time while i wait for my camber kit to get sorted out ?
thanks in advance

whens the last time you got an alignment?
usually toe destroys tyres way faster than camber ever will
unless you're excessively dumped i'd say its toe wear, not camber wear

If you see the "white string" thing. then your basically past all the rubbers of the tyre. and yes it is very dangerous to drive on a tyre with that condition.. yes you can fit a 225 wide tyre on a 18x8 easy..

last time i got an allignment was probably start of this year in march
arrr okay well ill get new ones asap
car is a euro and i lowered it to the point where there was no gap when the tyres went on almost a year ago. there is now a 1.5 finger gap at the rear and 1 finger at the front.
the fronts still got a good amount of tread and the wear is even where as the tread on the rear tyres is really bad from what cb7 says. thanks!
im gonna raise it a bit to hopefully reduce the camber until i get the camber kit

no its definitely camber wear or a combination with toe.
everyone heres misunderstood a great post that someone has made regarding the toe wear.
toe increases wear rate.. period.
but inside/outside specific wear is always caused by camber wear.
as proof i had 13mm toe out on both fronts of my car after a sussy install... my camber was perfectly flat for the ride height.. i lost about 50% tread in 10mins of 60km/h driving dead even across the surface.
ye it wear on the shoulders of the tyre is definatelty from excessive neg camber,
the string is the inside of the tyres, replace them asap.
raising the car will not eliminate the camber, just get a re-aligned, you might not even need a camber kit.

alignment will not always fix camber wear. All depends on how much camber there is.
Goto a wheel shop and get it looked at

I wouldn't take every word you find on the internet as sweeping truth. It applies, but it is NOT the explanation for every type of tyre wear you come across. Toe wears a large part of the tread width, but excessive camber will wear just the shoulder. I had -3.5 camber with correct toe and it still wore down the shoulder over a few thousand km. It did not wear down as quickly as it would with incorrect toe, but it WILL STILL wear with incorrect camber.

:thumbsup: And on a lowered Euro with stock control arms, the front and rear camber are NOT adjustable. So getting a 4-wheel alignment done without a camber kit does nothing for this problem.

just speaking of experience aaron ;) toe on my ek was shit, camber was -1.75degrees on both sides
after an alignment and a new pair of tyres, tyre wear is nowhere near as advanced as it was before the wheel alignment(chewed through a 90% set of goodyear eagle f1's in 6 months, changed to re001's and after 12 months and more k's than the goodyears saw)
anyway all i mentioned was that excessive toe will probably eat tyres faster than having excessive camber
didn't say camber wear doesn't exist and its all about toe
either way it would have ended up with him going to a tyre shop and getting things checked out anyway, no harm no foul :)

the other thing that is always overlooked is the fact the OP has 18x8 rims with 225/40/18 profile.
think about it... their wide tyres/rims with a mere 40 profile that has to be pumped to about 42psi which makes them very hard/stiff.
his setup is more sensitive to camber alignment that i would personally just ask them (sussy shop) to make sure its flat instead of specifying a +/-ive setting.
the slightest camber shift away from its flattest setting will wear either the inside or outside quicker than tyres with say a 55 profile because the 40 profile can't flex as much obviously due to less sidewall

alright thanks fellas. i was just recommended 40 by another member so im not really sure on what to get.
im thinking 50 or 55 would be better and more comfortable since its thicker ?
and what about the 225 width. what profile is most suitable in comfort and reduces wear rate
?

If your car is not dumped to the ground, then get a rear camber kit to fix up the out of spec camber.

Too much. Keep shopping around. Nitrogen filled is worth $0.50.
