View Full Version : Suspension/Steering problems in 94 Integra

Ive had my integra for about 2 months now.
Since i got it the suspension has been really rough. I've been able to put up with it up until now but its becoming more and more annoying - especially when there are other people in the car.
I can feel the slightest bump in the road and whenever the road is uneven or really bumpy the steering wheel jerks back and fourth and i really have to try to keep is straight. It's also really bad when driving on tram lines, i have no idea why, i have to fight the wheel to keep is straight.
Also when the road is uneven or I'm driving too close to the curb the wheel will lean to the left.
I'm an amateur when it comes to cars and I know its nothing I can fix myself but can anyone suggest what it may be?
Thanks
Edit:
By the way way, from what i know the car is stock except for 16" wheels.

thanks for your reply.
on a highway its usually pretty smooth. when i accelerate/brake hard it tends to shake a bit (ie. jerk to each side) but its not as noticeable as when im on a bad road.
and from what I know the suspension is stock.
thanks

i got the same problem......u need toi tighten the hub nut hard....and probably get a wheel alignment and wheel balance.......give us the wheel alignment readings if u have done it already.....my one happened to be on camber somehow....cas the car had been into an accident before

I know what it is !
My Mirage had the same issues. It would be the steering rack ends. Over time these wear down and steering is not as solid anymore, they tend to 'play' a hella of a lot more.
My advice for you would be to go to Pedders - pay them to do a Suspension check - This is really cheap like $30 or so bucks, they look at it all, check all of it, and then give u a summary of whats going on. No obligation, So you can go in, find out whats wrong and then go somewhere else if you want to to change the parts. Typically your looking at about $200 for rackends + labour charge from pedders.

larger wheels ill only amplify smaller issues in the suspension.
Such as worn bushes , loose or overly tighten tierod ends , loose hub nuts etc.

the heavier and lower profile tyres you get the more impact or road response youll get through your car.
the tyres are part of your suspension.
theyre the first thing that takes impact from small bumps.
shaking at high speeds with no braking is usually if you got unbalanced wheels or you dont have centric hub rings on aftermarket wheels.
shaking while braking is brake shudder. youve probably got warped discs.

I'll take it down for a suspension check on Monday and I'll go from there..

When I was driving a mates ITR the other night with 215/45/16 I found that it had the same issues...not so much the ride stiffness as its usual in a Type R...but you have to fight with the steering wheel and it is very tight. Same issue going down burke rd on the tram lines you have to fight with the wheels much more than in my own car...
To be honest I think its the width of the tyres...more contact pitch with the ground == more feedback into the steering system. Does a similar thing with a mates car with 205/50/15 but the ITR with 215's is much more noticable and requires constant correction. Until I get tyres for my new rims...i am running Silverstones 195/55/15 which actual ground contact area is only ~170 which is a joke...but I don't have those issues at all...my steering absorbs alot of the bumps and requires next to no correction...I expect this to change when I put the new rims/tyres on.
Good Luck.

Inner and outer tie rod ends, are very sensitive to civics, especially if you drive on bumpy roads with hard suspension. I have replaced 2 right tie rod ends already. I didn't use oem honda part, but 555. Almost the half price! If tie rods are loose you can hear a noise when you move on wavy and rough surfaces. Another weak point is the rack and pinion. The inner bushing tends to wear.
