What do you think of Crv's in general ?

I had a Crv 2000 , I can tell you there not the best 4WD out there also i would never take a CRV off road, thats just silly LOL..., And the engine is so small which is very similar to the Integra engine.
On the good side it has very good leg room and big boot.

whats your thoughts of CRV ?

my missus has a 99 model ,ive put in a 2inch lift kit and 4wd tyres ,there not made for 4wd really but it goes where i need it too ,were not stupid with it but it will tow a boat and a load of camping gear with no probs and is good for getting the boat out in muddy situations ,,weve never been bogged and it cops a caining on our dirt roads were i live and its never cost us a cent besides what aftermarket stuff ive put on it ,and its done 170,000ks and weve had it since new ,,so in short its a great car ,,,jas

Your gen 1 CR-V will go offroad just fine as long as you use your common sense and know where it can and can't go. We've taken ours offroad many times without any problems whatsoever, and have even driven past "real" 4WDs which got stuck in a spot whereas our CR-V ploughed thru just fine. They really are more capable than you'd think. Here are some of our adventures.

We have a 2000 RD-1 CRV Sport. It's a very comfortable cruiser and reasonably good on fuel. On a recent trip to Coffs Harbour from Brisbane it managed about 650km on one tank, which is about 9.5L per 100km.

Overall quite happy with our purchase, you see and feel the quality (built in Japan) and we hope to get many years from it.

I just checked the fuel consumption of my wife's 2007 CR-V (current model) 5AT Sport Luxury. The fuel consumption meter stated an average of 13.0 l/100km. I calculated the actual consumption between complete fills: The car used 40.9 litres to travel 282.5 km in urban/suburban light traffic driving with gentle use of the accelerator. This works out to an astounding actual consumption of 14.48 l/100km (or 19.5 miles per gallon in the ancient measure).

The meter has an apparent error of 1.5 l/100km.

you can buy the aero front and rear bumpers from Honda. It's like the modulo kit in Malaysia. Looks pretty clean.

Does this account for alot of onboard crap being hauled around unnecessarily adding to the weight? Tyre pressures correct and not too low? What type of fuel are you using, eg E10 consumption is higher and less efficient? Roof racks adding to wind drag hence increasing consumption? All these factors...

Fuel is always Shell ULP; no ethanol anything! Tyre pressures 36psi all around (set by my local Honda dealer). No roof rack (no external accessories). Extra weight includes child seat (not very heavy) and light/compact aluminium framed fold-away stroller that's not very heavy.

I think the tropical torrential monsoon rains in Darwin (drops the size of cane toads) have affected fuel consumption but my point was the inaccuracy of the average fuel consumption meter. The 1.5 l/100km difference between indicated and actual consumption is significant.

my crv 08 lux auto fuel cons was bad before the full wheel alignment. The car was drifting left on freeway not by road chamber and had average more than 12lt/100km on the first 5 weeks

now, the crv can manage to get 10.5-11 liter average fuel cons
my lifetime fuel cons is 10.6 after 4000km
i always reset the trip meter and filled up the fuel until clicked and last pump, I pumped 35.8 liter to full and i had around 337km on trip computer so I believe the trip computer somehow 99% accurate. so I am quiete happy with the trip computer so far.

we use the car in suburban traffic and quite clear way 60-80km zone and flat road most of the time.

thing could get worse if you drive the car only for short distance or lots of stop and go traffic. we had around 12.7lt/100km the other week when my mrs drove the car just to go to local train station for the whole rainy week.

we use BP ULP 91 on our CRV and could get better fuel economy than shell normal ULP. and we have 3 hondas and all our hondas fell somehow better accelleration with BP & mobil fuel, especially those that use premium unleaded

I use normal to hard accelleration on clear traffic up to 4000-4500rpm most of time before maintaining cruising speed. Tried to use gentle acceleration before but did not improve my average fuel cons, so I drive with normal to hard acceleration like the honda way.

some ppl said to use cruise control on clear way when cruising to improve fuel cons.

I just reduced my tyre pressure is 35psi from 38psi and will like to see if this make any different in fuel economy

maybe check your wheel allignment on your next service or try using other fuel. if you are happy with shell try to pump on different shell service station for the next fill up :)

Our CR-V tracks straight. No wheel alignment issues but I have also noticed that my wife doesn't use the climate control auto function so the aircon compressor is probably working for longer periods. Well, it is hot, wet and humid up here at the top of OZ!

We just spent the long weekend up at Rainbow beach and decided to see just where our CRV could take us. It conquered the Cooloola way and even Freshwater Rd with ease. Quite impressed with it, like Alpine said earlier they really are more capable than most people think. It got through soft sand, mud and inclines with absolutely no problems whatsoever. Didn't drive it right onto the beach but had no doubts that it could've done the job easily.

I didn't get any photos because my camera battery politely decided to die just after we set off.

Aaah yes, Cooloola Way, we conquered that too in our gen 1. Did your pictures look similar to these? ;-)

While my wife, daughter and I were spending a week away up north in Noosa at the Sunshine Coast, I really got the bug for doing some offroading. That was when I grabbed the keys to our CR-V and went searching the area for some tracks.

But first we stopped for some breakfast near our resort...only to return and found a heap of crap splattered on our hood!! Not happy. I promptly returned to the resort to wash it all off before it hardened. Lesson learnt: Never park under a tall palm tree.

I can pretty confidently say you're mad for taking an RD-1 through Condamine Gorge. I have no idea how you managed to get through all 14 crossings. We tried this earlier in the year (before the recent rain dump) and very quickly turned around.

The only time you'd ever get something like a CRV through there is in drought....

Alpine
25-10-2010, 08:37 PM
Managed it just fine. We've done Condamine Gorge twice in fact. The CRV did just fine, no problems at all. The water looks deeper than it really is and I admit I was hesitant at first, but I watched the Toyota 4Runner in front of me go thru and saw where the water went up to on his car and then knew roughly how deep it would be on mine, and I knew that my CRV could do it, and it did with flying colors. Yours would have done just fine too. Like I said, use common sense, observe others in front of you then make a judgement call.
