turbo rebuild

just wondering.
Been told that a turbo needs a thrust bearing changed.
Anyone know if you can do this without an entire rebuild?

Also anyone know how much it costs?
its a GT2871R - ball bearing

usually its better to rebuild the turbo when its in pieces, cz the turbo fan needs to be balanced and all that jazz and usually seals maybe worn down ??

for a turbo like that in nz you wouldve been charged 800 bucks for parts and labour.

i got quoted yesterday from gcg for that turbo gt2871r
service, starts at $650 including seals and bearings, if theres anything broken then thats on top

So you know, your turbo has a ball bearing cartridge core.
The thrust bearing is integral to this.
Are you sure it needs to be relaced? That is, is the turbo stuffed?
It's unusual for the core of a Garret GT turbo to fail without an underlying cause.
I.e. Obstruction to oil feed or drain or failure of coolant flow to core.

3. Purchase a new CHRA at a discounted price!
"*At a minimum, the center housing must be re-usable to qualify for this program. The Garrett Performance Distributor will determine the condition upon receiving the CHRA and has final say in the applicability of a CHRA for this program."

hey Adrian, not my turbo, its one i want to buy. It needs a rebuild but i'm just checking out to see if its worth buying or not.

My turbo still runs great, just looking at getting something bigger ;)
(taken your advice on a bigger beast)

yeah i've asked Haks to find out how much it is to rebuild already, just gotta chase him up.....
But yeah i'll try and find out about that trade-in thing

LOL, according to Garrett, the offer applies... (But I'm not surprised it isn't honoured)

Don't buy rooted parts. Ever!
Stick to this & you'll be happy.

Hopefully i'll end up with a GT28RS or a GT2871R.
Just depends on which one comes first.

Then when its all built (i'm hoping after Xmas based on my good friends ;p)

Hopefully it will make somthing in the 180kw mark at 10PSI

fixing old components isnt that bad. atleast u have the housings. the other good thing bout rebuilding it is when its in there u may aswell trick it up bigger wheels etc.

my t28bb rear seal blew the other day..

instread of replacing it.. i just went and got a 2871r also

and a new manifold..

but might be a better option if you replace the 2871r

I love my gt28rs :) i think it needs a service also. Spits a bit out the exhaust on start but after that its fine. I ran it for a year without a BOV at 7psi so i wouldn't be surprised if one of the seals are stuffed or if it caused a bit of shaft play.
