View Full Version : Garage, Reverse & Exhaust Soot?

I'm sure a few of you have this problem at home -
You reverse into your garage and have to reverse the car right up against the back wall. From then on every time you start your car a little bit of exhaust soot gets thrown up against the wall and in turn gets deflected onto the back of your car, over a couple fo days leaving nasty exhaust soot all over your cars clean, sexy arse...
Now parking head on into my garage is not an option. We have 2 cars in the garage and because the garage is placed in a cramped townhouse complex driveway it's nearly impossible to go head on in the 2nd space.
Any ideas on how to stop the soot from being deflected onto the car?
(I've tried parking as far away from he back wall as possible with no success...)

try that sticky paper stuff that catches flys. it might work to catch the soot
puma.

try place a fan in the garage which blows air perpendicular to the direction of the exhaust
maybe a wax of somesort? that repels stuff sticking to the car?

maybe cover ur exahust tip with a big old sock when u start the car??? maybe 2 or 3 socks if the socks are really that old and thin
sounds funny but it might just work hahaha
TRy installing one of those flap things on the tip of your muffler. Like what trucks have. So only under WOT do they open.

All great ideas, keep em coming guys!
try place a fan in the garage which blows air perpendicular to the direction of the exhaust
That's a good idea, though there's no room
try that sticky paper stuff that catches flys. it might work to catch the soot
Don't think this will be a good solution in the long run. Will have to change the paper stuff too often
maybe a wax of somesort? that repels stuff sticking to the car?
maybe, though the soot is still getting thrown on the car...

lol don't think i can be bothered to take the stock off everytime lol...

too drastic I think... won't look all that good either...

the only option is the sticky styff, that MIGHT work
other than that, no, there isnt

have u considered maybe redirecting your exhaust to the side?

like maybe with an angled plate stuck on the wall?
That might not be a bad idea...
Angled to the left or right and slightly downward... ?

yep that could work
my old man used to own an old holden, and it had a side exit exhaust
the wall of the garage and fence were coated black where the exhaust pointed lol

an angled plate stuck on the wall?? o.O
i meant actually positioning the exhaust so it sits to the left or right a bit so its not so directly firing backwards.. ie not coming straight out of ur car but angled sitting to the left or right a bit.

and itll still spray soot on the wall, and still go onto the car
plate the wall might work well? just that you're going to have a plate sticking out of your wall? lol
and might be dangerous to walk by?

get a pvc tube and build it like those truck air filter things and stick it on ur zorst wen u start ur car.
the fumes will then emit out the top of the pipe. kinda like a snorkle.

btw how much space to u have to work with, very little?? im guessing
with that angled plate u could always use cardboard so it doesnt damage the car or hurt people

I like this idea, but if I was to do it I would stick the PVC pipe onto the wall and it would be big. This eliminates the need ot be absolutely precise when backing up into he garage...
On second thought, it wouldn't really work since the muffler doesn't stick out from the bodywork/rear bumper...

That's a good idea with the cardboard. the garage just fits 2 cars with perhaps 1m in between, so not much space. Danger is not really an issue because no one really walks past the area where the muffler meets the wall...

Petronas, do you idle your car for a while before driving? It's not good to let the car idle from cold for too long, better off driving sedately straight away. Am I way off or would this help a bit? As it normally takes up to a minute to start spitting.

how about buying a piece of foam from clark rubber and just putting it on the wall behind.
it'll absorb whatevers thrown at it and u can wash it every now and then.

I use to idle the car for a minute or two to get the oil circulating n stuff... But now I quickly drive out of the garage and then idle...
The soot is there because of when I start the car AND when I reverse into the garage, so it's unavoidable...

I like this one as well... If the plate ont he wall idea does not work I will try this...

PVC exhaust snorke pipes?
socks over tips?
deflector panels?
This thread is whack. Its just soot... Its a fact of motoring - cars get dirty. just wash it when you wash the rest of your car???
Our 5th gens shouldnt shoot out that mch crap anyway? Mine is as bad as they get and i can't imagine it hitting a close wall and reflecting back onto the wal???

line some panelled filters (those removable things used in extractors fans above kitchen tops/ovens/grills etc) across the wall. They are porous so they should simply sponge the gunk thrown out your exhaust.

We're just thinking of way to minimize soot getting reflected onto the car... I think we all know exhaust soot is fact of motoring...
Chillax dude lol...

Place a bit of old crapy carpet against the wall. It will catch the carbon well. Have seen it done to prevent the wall from getting black. I have done this to prevent my garage floor from getting black on cold start. (I have J's exhaust, and muffler tip points down to the ground)
If you run rich, and give your car a boot, you will still get heaps of carbon deposit over your rear bar. it's just how aerodynamics works... when the wind comes over your car, it creates a slight whirlpool type thing at the back of your car, and the carbon that comes out of your car when driving spits it back the otherway on to your rear bar.

If your car is stock, have you considered replacing your cat?

if youve got soot at startup, its highly likely that the soot is coming out while ur driving and getting onto the bumper anyway. as the air comes from under your car it comes out the back and swirls up and around so soot gets onto the bumper no matter what you do..
alot of it will be from when your driving. maybe not from reflecting off the wall.. sounds a little bit unlikely,, not questioning your credibility though lol
