Does anyone know if the steering wheel has to be removed to take out the whole front dash of an eg civic.

Or can it be done without removal of the steering wheel.

Cheers

You can remove the lower portion of the dash where your knees are....then there will be 4 bolts to remove(2+2), which will allow the whole steering column to drop down into the footwell. Then you can remove the dash.
Or just remove the steering wheel...which is somewhat easier/quicker

does the steering wheel have an airbag? if it does it's illegal and dangerous to remove the wheel.

if not;
make sure the steering wheel is straight
take off the cover off on the steering wheel,
you should see a nut, take it off.. i find using a wheel brace or a mate to hold the wheel steady.
pull the wheel off
done.

loosen up the screws, put in first gear and allow vtec to kick in.. that way the dash goes flying through the windscreen. good luck!

no its not illegal to remove, its illegal to replace an airbag wheel with a non airbag wheel

no it is not hard to take the steering wheel off man,
1. Steering Wheel Cover off.
2. Undo bolts/nuts behind that Cover.
3. Remove.

on the air bag ones it's different to non air bagged. look on the side of the steering wheel there are like little plastic covers, pop them off and you'll see 2 torx screws, one per side. Disconnect your battery first, undo the torxes and slowly slide out the air bag and disconnect the plugs from the back. you also have a srs light on you cluster that will come and stay on if you don't have an airbag connected.

As above....plus

Before taking off the airbag make sure the car has been off for 10 minutes at least.
after taking off the airbag (by removing the torx screws and unplug horn and SRS harness which is yellow wires) ...make sure you place it down with the padded side facing up....i don't know why....it just says that in the manual.
Don't turn on the ignition on while the plugs are out or else your srs light will remain on. But you can turn it off pretty easily too if need be.
Make sure the horn is working when you put in your aftermarket wheel.

its much easier to just drop the steering wheel.
No need to take the steering wheel off to remove the dash.

You pull the screws out of the panels around and under the steering wheel.
There are then 2 nuts and 2 bolts holding the steering wheel to the steering column support, remove these and it will drop the whole steering assembly onto the floor (dont just let it drop, guide it down obviously). You may also need to remove the ignition switch plugs on the steering column as lowering the steering wheel may pull on the wiring, thats no big deal though, just unplug them from on the steering column.

I wouldnt waste my time removing the wheel unless you are changing it...
They can sometimes be a pain to remove.

With the steering column lowered you can easily remove the dash...

Just my opinion and i've removed my dash before.
Either way could work though i'm sure.

You have to place tha airbag padded side up because if the airbag goes off when it's upside down then it will shoot the whole airbag assembly about 2 storeys in the air which could be dangerous. If it goes off padded side up it will be similar to as if it went off in the car.

We got to let them off on the ground upside down at trade school to see what it would do. Was pretty cool to see lol.

pull apart the cluster and take out the little light module thing. Easy peasy to do. Unclip the clear plastic cover and take it off. Flip the remainder of the cluster upside down. On the back you will see 3 screws holding in your speedo. Undo them carefully and slide the speedo out from the cluster. Now you can remove the srs light module.

I had to remove mine and out and put in a EG6 cluster since it didn't come with one and i didn't want to run the airbag w/out one, wasn't sure if anything would happen.

Anyhow, please note that it is ILLEGAL (here in qld at least) to remove an airbag and use an aftermarket steering wheel. So in order to cover my own a55, the above info was provided as a guide only and should be used at your own risk.
PM me for pix if you get stuck :p

i think initially he just wanted to take off the dash....and then he wanted to change the steering wheel?
Keep in mind that even if you change the steering wheel to non airbag one. If it doesn't have padding on the centre (where the horn is) then cops may still defect you.
