hey guys,

something is up with my car, wondering if anybody would be able to provide a quick diagnosis

i know i need to change the thermostat, which i'll be doing soon, and maybe it has somethign to do with my problem

all of a sudden, my car's idle has gone all wierd.. it appears to be about 500rpm higher than normal.. cold start is at approx 2000 - 2500 rpm, and idling at operating temperature, it sits at 1500 rpm..

also, from time to time when its in cold-start mode, the revs fluctuate up down a few hundred rpm about every 10 seconds..

starting to get me worried, any advice would be appreciated.

thanks.

Its probably not the problem of the thermostat. Cause I just had mine change. like 4 days ago. Before that idling was fine. If you're going for a thermostat, go get one from HONDA. It'll cost $59 and you get the O-ring with it. I bought my thermostat from an auto shop and it didn't come with an O-ring. Cheaper, but I would have been f**ed if the old O-ring was unsable. And the difference between the metal quality of the Honda Thermostat was alot stronger compared to the other thermostat.

But sorry no help about your idling. Maybe others would know. g luck

For the idle problem, you will have to change the spark plugs, unplug the negative terminal on the battery, leave it for an hour or so (while this happens you can chnage your thermostat, coolant and oil and oil filter). Once you re connect the negative it should reset all the settings on the ECU and reprogram itself. Let it warm up on idle, take it around the block so its at normal operating temp. If the idle is above 800 then you will have to screw the idle control on the throttle body so to decrease the idle you will have to screw in and out to up the idle.

thanks guys.. i'll do as suggested ASAP & keep you posted.

the problem became worse last night.. now when at a complete stop, the idle continually fluctuates from 1k to 2k rpm.. its really embarasing, everybody at the lights thinks im going to run them.

i did some more searching and i found that it could be the IACV??..

try it. No doubt it will be dirty....it helped my car out...and others on the forum.

Or try my DIY ECU test to see if its a sensor playing up....SEARCH for it...

i had a similar problem on my car...it turned out to be an electronic idle control device mounted on your throttle body. My car fluctuated in revs when it was hot and got to the stage where it kept stalling. That was sad coz everyone kept thinking i couldnt drive manual 4 shit.

im not going to Jump and say get a new one, but if you can take a good one off a known good car and put it on yours. if the problem goes away then buy a new one. also you could try unpluging the connector to it while its fluctuating and see if the fluctuating stops. this will result in a fault code being displaced. you will have to reset your ecu after that test. 99% of time its the IACV

thanks dude,

im fairly sure its the IACV also.. any idea on how much they cost? im guessing around the $100 mark.

i have a close friend with a dc2 so hopefully he'll let me operate on our cars over the weekend..
