Did this today with the help of my best mate, thought id show you guys. Lemme know what you think :)
First we took out the resonator, then out came the rest of the piping
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i120/picsjay/The%20civic/18-11-08_1107.jpg
Then attached extra piping to the cut original pipe
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i120/picsjay/The%20civic/18-11-08_1135.jpg
Placed into the car, ready for bumper to go back on
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i120/picsjay/The%20civic/18-11-08_1153.jpg
With the bumper back on, and end of piping leading to the front

not bad, but id think about using much wider piping.

just not sure on that to be honest. Doubt you will see any gains at all.

that extra pipe does absolutely nothing, but hey at least the resonator is gone so it will sound alot better. for a better sound though take that whole pipe off :)

haha yeah i wasnt sure id get any gains at all, only it does sound throatier and sounds cool cos u can har the air rushing in lol...
but i might end up cutting back that piping, if theres no real gains from cooler air. .. also it does have a k and n panel filter,
this is temporary till can get a ram intake
cheers:)

There's big gains to be had if your air filter sits right next to your turbo Manifold breathing in hot air :p
10kw in my case :o

it's a heat shield for the air filter guys! It's a d14a4 n/a eudm civic.
As for the intake volume just think that bigger is not always better _especially with stock cam-head_ You need air velocity and better air flow as well. Generally i am in favor of short ram intakes under the condition that you supply cold air somehow. In my case i use a ceramic coated header which ensures significantly lower engine bay temperatures and shielded filter.

ok, so is the best thing for me to do at this point, cut back that piping?
we thought we were awesome cos we made 'cold air' diy hahahaha
ah well, cheers:)

Your havin' a go Saran, that's all that matters.Just need to get it workin' better :)
The whole unit needs to be enclosed so no hot engine bay air is gettin' in there. That's the trick.I was stuck for ages cause I couldn't find a suitable enclosure for the filter until I found the one I got now.
Thanks Mr Wills and Luke! hahahaha Luke, didn't really help the y4 auto :)

19-11-2008, 12:22 PM
thanks beez, thought id have a try aaha
well, im kinda sure the unit is enclosed as of now as its just still a stock airbox with a k&n panel filter haha,
but until i get enough money to do a proper job, this is alright i reckon.
i like the idea of 'cold air' going in, whether is makes a difference or not, but before the air was coming in from the engine bay anyway, from that oem u pipe thing,
so i imagine ive helped things at least a bit... well i hope so
beeza
19-11-2008, 12:32 PM
Yeah I totally feel the same way.I would much rather air from outside the engine bay going in the engine than hot engine bay air forsure!
I'm like that,I do all the little or tricky mods that cost bugger all to do and probably don't amount to a hell of a lot like a engine conversion but ya gotta work with what ya got.
At least if I do a conversion,I should have all the other things done :)

it will help, but a box with the pipe coming in would be better

I'm going to put the air filter in the front bumper and run the hose to the intake piping

just went for a drive in the rain, the inside of the tube seems to be a bit wet, but i doubt water would get sucked upwards into the airbox would it?
also car seemed to take ages to start, i had to pump the accelerator for it to kick it, first time its ever done this... becasue of the air intake maybe? or jsut maybe cos it was cold?

19-11-2008, 08:58 PM
did you mess up with any sensors?
sarantosser
19-11-2008, 09:13 PM
nope dont think so.. just the piping
saikou27
19-11-2008, 09:16 PM
sometimes the ecu must readjust itself. the increased airflow and different temperature maybe?
dahon
19-11-2008, 09:18 PM
^^ yea... try doing an ecu reset maybe...
cant find the thread here... just search for it...
and... keep up the good work with the sedan btw man!
diy is the way.. helps u learn and discuss... hehehe
sarantosser
19-11-2008, 09:47 PM
haah cheers guys, ill take a look for the ecu reset, is that safe?
mrwillz
19-11-2008, 10:02 PM
safe as!
happens when you change battery also
beeza
20-11-2008, 08:34 AM
Yeah, reset the ECU and see how it is then. The ECU must set a new air/fuel curve. i.e optimum setting/curve with each new mod.
saikou27
20-11-2008, 09:30 AM
easiest way to do it is to just remove the negative terminal from the battery. not quite sure how long u have to leave it off because the ecu has KAM ( keep akive memory ) anyway when i do mine i leave it for about 20 mins then come back and put the negative terminal back. fire it up let it idle for a couple of mins. then take it out on an EASY cruise, dont thrash it. give it some time to readjust its sensors. after that it should be all good :)
beeza
20-11-2008, 09:41 AM
There's an easier way...
Remove the ECU fuse in the fuse box in the engine bay. It's the BIG one and it's 80A (amp).
Leave it out for 5-7 minutes (a good 5 minutes)
put it back in and start the car
don't touch anything!
let it idle for 5-7 minutes
turn it off
turn it back on and your done.
Easy as.
Everyone should know and do this and also the ECU check.

20-11-2008, 02:15 PM
Ok i did an ecu reset!
i used beezas method and just took it for a drive, driving normally as i do (up to around 4500rpms for each gear, and it seems ALOT smoother!
are these the results im meant to get? just seems to shift alot better, although my intital take off seems to be a bit less responsive but maybe itll learn?
cheers
beeza
20-11-2008, 02:19 PM
Yep.That's the desired result. If you have done it correctly, that's what will happen.
Good one mate!
If the engine check light comes, you will have to do that to get rid of it too.A must know.

But on closer inspection,it does sit horizontally.Sa-weet!
Is there only good cool air getting in the filter now?
Can you feel any difference?
