View Full Version : Connecting Rods - Problem

So... I've diagnosed my front end tapping to connecting rods going laters.

Anyways, for those who don't know what that sounds like open up youtube.

Well anyways from reading, It's been said that I shouldn't be driving with the engine like that, considering it will most likely cause my conr-ods to fire out of the engine. Well here's the situation. I'm thinking of replacing them myself. Which would be alot cheaper than bring it to a mechanics and getting them to replace it. Where they would excuse and say you need to take out the engine yadi yada. Well I've read a bit and most likely the con-rods can be accessible from above the oil sump. Hence requiring removal of the oil sump, correct? and replacing them from there.

Just need some guidance on this, or recommend a mechanic or engine re-builder to do the job in West of Melbourne.

the crankshaft will be exposed after you remove the oil sump. you can disconnect the con rods from the crank but the pistons will still be connected. you'll have to remove the the whole head to remove the pistons. i hope u have some background mechanical knowledge or at least a friend that know what they're doing because this is a complicated procedure

hmm wow so noob. what car is this in? h22 swap is a pricey expedition into a non prelude or accord. not a viable option if your worried about the cost of a mechanic to fix your engine let alone the cost of a new engine and the mechanic to fit that which would be ALOT more.

1.5k for fitment of a h22a, 2.5 for a h22a package.

4k all up.

750 for a b16a, 200-500 for drop or free since its just a drop.

400-500 for d16y + 200-500~ for drop

figured if i'm gonna get another engine into my eg, might aswell get more power.

h22 are from the preludes right? wouldnt mods be quite expensive because of the lack of aftermarket support. i'd stick with the b series or a replacement d series.

h22a - 2.5 is full package for a drop into an eg

my choice would be a b18c. more mods available and probally an easier fit. any ideas how much a b18 costs? the h22a is fine but the b18 has alot more potential in my opinion. even if its not a type r motor and just a vtir motor. what will you be using this car for anyway, daily driver, track car....?

r yu sure your conrod bearings are causing the tapping?

well i've taken it to one mechanics he agrees, my revs sits below 1, when it use to sit heaps higher, almost like it wants to stall. Knocks really loud. If anyone wants to have a look in melb feel free to drop by.

you can replace the rods... but if the block or crank is scratched by the rod then you will need to replace the whole bottom end.
