View Full Version : knocking / thudding noise on driver side

happened recently and randomly.
not 100% sure what it is. i thought one of my lug nuts were loose or broke off but they are fine. it is not a bottomed-out shock as ive previously experienced one before, different scenario.
at first when i take off (normally) i hear a single thud noise. didnt thought it was a bigger deal. but now after driving, there is this consistent thudding noise (like you can feel on the driver side floor).
it doesnt makes this noise when i accelerate or keep consistent speed but when i back off the gas pedal, the thudding noise reappears. when i tap the brake, it stops but then comes again. when i come to a complete stop and let go the brake pedal, i hear a single thud (ie similar to taking off).
ideas?

engine bay mounts.
rear engine mount.
front sway bar bushings.
lower control arm bushings.
link rods.
spring fell out of its bottom grove.
if youre on auto it could be the gearbox, could be oil starved, changing gears too harsh (internal fault, wear n tear)
its good to have the car up on stands or on a hoist and have a quick look. im 100% sure youll find it straight away.
could even be that your tie rod lock nuts are loose.

its manual, ive been thinking its the gearbox mount. i know what it looks like and where it is, but i dont know how to assess if its stuffed or not.
steering handling, power delivery still feels the same.
just an annoying thudding noise.

may i ask how much did it cost for it to get fixed?
and did you DIY or got someone else to do it?

cost me about 300 bucks i think.
got quoted 3-400 including parts.
before you order parts, just get it looked at, or if you know what to look for, diy.
save you spending money on bushes if you dont need them.

a way to check if your lower control arm bushes are gone is to do a brake test.
At the dealer i work, we always do this with alfa romeos, since they have a tendency to chew on those bushings, due to poor manufacturing design.
drive the car 10kmh/s or so and brake intermitently. or sudden brakes in other words, have someone to look at the wheel from the side.
if your wheel moves/jolts back its your control arms.
not sure if honda provides a bushing kit for it to replace it or comes as a whole control arm unit, but yeh, either do that test, or look with a torch into the black inserts (bushings) of the control arm and see for cracks, or wear.
it could however be your sway bar bushings as well (as ive said.)
if you can move your swaybar side to side with you personal strength, the bushings are worn.

I say it's your rear engine mount. If you watch your engine and hit the throttle from inside the cabin you should see ur engine thrust forward dramatically. Like a lot a lot of movement when it moves foward. lol

with the car off and engine cool
grab your intake manifold and pull back and forth
if it moves then its the rear mount
it should be solid if the rear mount is still good

feels pretty solid to me
as in whole chassis rocking solid

tried the brake test yet?
by your picture of your control arm bushing, correct me if im wrong, but isnt that suppose to sit flush? seem like you got a little clearance there.
do my brake test, and come bak to us =].
oh and that sway bar... could you move it with your hands as in sideways back and forth. cause by that picture it looks like you can see where the sway bar use to sit. (see how theres a darker bit on the sway bar and dust around it)

it could be your steering rack ends as mine was making a loud knocking noise when i would acelerate / back off and such then i got em replaced and there was no more noises.
When you go over bumps does the steering wheel tend to get pulled to either side ? You might have Power steering so this wouldn't be as noticeable.
One thing you should do either which way is go to pedders and get them to do a suspension check (call and make an appointment before you rock up). It costs like $19 i think - its very cheap and they will tell you whats wrong, theres no obligation so it works out good.

^ mine doesnt make any knocking noise when accelerating / maintaining speed / braking.
noise appears when i let the car roll or taking the pedal off.
bumps like driveways, speedhumps, inconsistent surfaces does not affect the steering wheel.
alot of people have suggest its the suspension, but im not convinced this is the noise a suspension would make.
thanks for ideas guys.
will try omgjais brake test next
