Hey Guys,

my d16A8 is getting a little tired with over 320,000km and i was looking at a replacement engine and i want to keep it original but was looking at putting a ZC engine in instead.

Can anyone tell me how hard is it to get one of these engines? and what the costs would be? also i heard its a straight bolt in and that you can use your existing gearbox and ecu, any tips and advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Mick

DOHC ZC's are quite rare, and even harder to find with low kms.
But yes, you are correct, they're a straight swap over.

yup exactly 100% straight swap. Just reuse all your old sensors wiring etc.

Or just source a local D16a8 out of a newer EG Si , these would have a few less k's on them !

thanks for the advice guys, how much would a second hand ZC and a newer EG D16A8 cost?

And if i found a good low km ZC engine would you go for that rather than the EG D16A8?

id rather get the eg d16a8. atleast its a local model with some sort of guarentee of k's.

you can pick em up for around $200-400

ok great, thakns for the tip.

Were is the best place to get them and do you recommend to do anything to motor (eg bearings etc) before putting the new engine in.

Careful, the EG D16A8 is an OBD1 motor where as your ED9 is OBD0.

whoops i didnt realise that, however my preference is a ZC engine but i know they are really hard to find and with low kms. How much would i be looking at for a decent ZC?

just use intake manifold, dizzy and sensors etc from your current motor.

D16A8 in ED9 is a ZC anyway

you will get played with the harmonic balancer if you use a EG ZC. you will loose your power steering

dumb question...why Mr ECU MAN ? slightly offset or different size balancer ?

Crank shaft is thicker in the EG ZC
the ED9 ZC uses a V belt for power steering, EGSi uses ribbed ( for her pleasure ) (http://b16a2.kicks-ass.net/temp/ribbed.wav)

i thought the power steering would be the same as both the ZC and D16A8 use the same type of belt?

do they ?

Quite possible if the generation is the same. But like I said above there is an OBD0 ZC and an OBD1 ZC, so there could indeed be subtle differences in things like the PS belt (eg: sensors and dizzy wiring) between two generations of the "same" engine.

yup the d16a8/zc spans a good 8 or so years in production , and OBD0 to OBD1 , so there are bound to be a few differences.
Anyone make sure ?
