View Full Version : Rubbing/knocking sound in an odyssey
Okay, Its a 1998 Odyssey so its the ancient one with the facelift and new engine/new tranny etc if you guys can remember that far back.
We used PULP98 for 2 months just as a trial and after that time, the car made these sounds as if something was rubbing or clunking against something. Had the car jacked up and checked. Everything seemed fine. TOok it to a mechanic who also said there was nothing wrong.
We changed back to PULP91 and now, there is less of that noise.. but still a little every now and again. It seems to be only when the car is under load, or when you accellerate and you let go of the gas, the sound sometimes appears. Its quite random.
Anyone have any ideas what it could be?
Thanks in advanced =)

your kind of vague with your description. where is it coming from?
Its coming from the front left.
At first, i thought it was the wheel bearing.. but its not =( Cause its not constant.
Atm, im thinking maybe the fuel filter.. but i seriously dunno..
Car is serviced every 6 months and the car, over the 10 year period, has only done 55,000 Km's so VERY DAMN Low! My parents are considering just to sell this up and buy a new car.. hmm =(

you should check your disc brakes. maybe you need to replace them
my old car have the same problem before and I bring it over to mechanics twice and they say everything is fine.
After that I show them that there is something wrong, and show them the noise by driving the car with them. after that they find it is the disc brakes issue.
Car has brand new Brake pads and the discs themselves have been machined
Also, the machanic has been in the car.. and driven the car.. and still doesnt know =(

check the suspension for any loose bolts?
had the jack out while servicing my mazda...
Jacked the Odyssey up again. The front swaybar bushes are literally solid.. would that contribute to it? =S

maybe, take then out and coat the surfaces that rub against metal in rubber grease and see what happens. if the noise goes then comes back after a while put new bushes in it (lube them in rubber grease when you put em in)

wd40 ftw!
Everything all greased up but still the sound continues. I also found that this sound only happens when the car is running at temp. When the car is cold.. it doesnt make a noise. Dad and i know for a fact its NOT from the engine. We are now suspecting the exhaust system? Any thoughts?

check belt tensions and also check to see if you dont have a noisey bearing in the belt system. also does the noise appear when the A/C is on or off? if you dont know how to tension the belts pm me
Just a quick update,
The car suddenly wouldnt start due to an old battery [It was the same battery that came out of the factory.. soo pretty damn good for 10 years]
Called up NRMA batteries to get it replaced. NOW, theres no more sound!!.. wierd..Can anyone explain this?

maybe the battery is moving around?
try tightening the bolt thing or just get a new one to see if it really is that??
The battery is tight. everything is fine.. Still can't locate the noise. Its also just soo hard to replicate. It happens randomly.
When you accelerate, there is no sound.
When your travelling at a constant speed, theres no sound.
when you let go of the accelerator, the noise comes. Its not really a knocking sound, rather something rubbing together.
We've almost given up. The car has done almost 60K's and its almost 11 years old [Feb 1998]. Such little km's.. but now if this doesnt get fixed, probably a new mazda cx7 or new gen odyssey on the books
Also, car has an oil change + filter every 6 months as per service intervals [not buy honda [DIY FTW] but still using OEM fluids/parts etc]

Just sold my 95 Gen 1 yesterday, virtually trouble free looking for a Gen2.
Mmm, I've run mine on Shell E10 for 12months never a peep, happy with mileage (9-11Km/L) and save 4 cents with a voucher-recommended.
Was zippy enough and kids loved it, could fit 3 x 46" Sony's in the back or 11 Microwaves or around 3 set of alloys, some with tyres (lots of shrubs too) - great car.
Maybee the pad retention clips on the brake pads?
Maybee a CV joint but, I don't think so.
Check engine mounts, my FRONT MOUNT BOLT fell out last year, slight vibration sometimes only, found the bolt in the undertray behind the bumper! Its only 120mm long!
all the best Dave
