View Full Version : Different types of bass
Hey guys,
I've realised that there is different bass coming from different cars.
For example, some cars have nice clean bass that does not rattle the boot whereas some have bass that rattles lik no tomorrow. Is there a specific reason for this?

some people havent tuned their subs...?
or theyve set the gain up really high.. etc etc...
play around with ur sub amp settings and ull see when u get the perfect settings for ur car

diff chassis, diff box, diff subs, diff sub mounting
so yeah i gues theres a few variables

Qtc, damping, sound deadening, crossover points, sub sonic filter, EQ, boost, gains, etc....

or there are some that know what they are doing and others who dont :)

yeah as mentioned above there are different variables depends on the quality of the sub quality of the system, power, settings, box, boot size, the way the sub is placed

Also if they have 2 10 inch subs or 1 12 inch or 2 12's or even a 15 inch sub. In my limited experience with subs I have found that the 10 inch subs give a tighter more controlled bass, whereas the bigger subs are more loose and muddy (also louder). I realise that this may depend on a number of factors (box type, amplification, sound deadening etc) but I prefer the smaller subs for the tighter bass.

the size of a sub has nothing to do with the quality of the bass.
ive heard an 18" sub that played cleaner than many 10s
it depends on teh quality of the sub, and the installation
also, the boot rattling issue is just sound deadening

its all in the installation... the box is everything when it comes to subs, build a shit box, subs gonna sound like shit, thats what it boils down to really

i thought this thread was gonna be the diff between mid & sub bass..
to answer the specific question, like mrwillz said its 'diff chasis'. a chasis with a weak & flimsy bootlid with loose joints will rattle more than a solid lid thats held firmly in place. SD'er helps. like euro trash mentioned, this has more to do with installation and car rather than 'different bass', or systems specs or size of sub/s.

Each sub has it's response rate, starting from 20hz up to... as mentioned depends on quality of sub and size, smaller size subs temp to have higher frequencies, as higher frequency wave is less in length. 6" speakers can start their range from 75 hz, again depends on quality... Anyway if you get cheap stuff you will get range of your sound 20-200, 500-22000, so you will be missing 200-500hz . If you spend few bucks in right things and tune your system you will get bass and sound coming from whole car, not just from your boot... Some ppl spend heaps of money and still system sounds crap, so don't forget about interference of waves :) (some alpine heads will release sound with delays)
acoustics...;)
I've got 2 x 12" Kicker Comps run off a Sony MonoAmp and had it professionally installed so I should be able to get that clean bass if I did everything else right?

what sub box u have?? ported?? or non ported?
ported is the ones that have holes on the sides so you can hear more BASS good for techno....
non ported boxes is the ones with no holes so give you a nice sounding Bass for R&B...

I have one hole on ONE of the sides. When I get the chance.. I'll get the part number and I'll show you a pic. I'm into the RNB.. not the techno.. so I screwed up :P

when u say "clean bass" do you mean 'no mass rattling from outside of the car' or....
ported box is fine. if anything its better for r&b since that genre has more lower notes.. so itll play down low more efficiently.

professionally installed is pretty subjective if you get my drift..... :p

i like RNB and i ran a ported box..
also, a ported box doesnt just have a "hole" in the side
it has a port of specific length and diameter to tune a particular box size to a certain frequency
basically, a ported box will play lower and keept a flatter frequency response whereas a sealed box will roll off sooner

your asking questions to which there is no difinitive answer... install it, properly.... tune, tune and then tune again till all posibilities are exhausted, if your still not happy, buy new gear and start over

you guys haven't heard proper bass before, stop telling porky's!!! :p
as we say in the industry, adding truck loads of bass in a car is easy, making it sound good now thats the trick...

but when you hear truckloads of bass that is perfect, it makes you wana cream

As in.. bass that can be heard from outside the car and does not rattle the boot.. so in other words.. what you said :P

how it sounds inside is another issue

going by your definition of clean bass, just install it then SD if neccessary
worry about how it sound inside. if you want the wank factor just wind down all the windows & open your boot while you drive

Sounds nice and clean inside!

It sounds like all you want to do is drive round with your windows down cranking the crap out of your subs, and you hoping your boot doesn't rattle at the same time.... Lucky the Euro is a solid car. :)

mate ive got a 15 inch 3200 watt sub in my boot, and a very big box for it to sit in, i have it facing directly upwards, towards the boot, beacsue i made a quick box, thinking it would fall apart and crack soon, but it hasnt so im still stuck with it lol.
in my euro i used to get a lot of boot rattle with certant songs, it depends on the frequency and tone of the bass that will determine the rattling.
if you want to sound deaded using dynamat or something similar it doesnt really do much, instead it makes a farting noise from the air trying to escape through th boot seals, thats why wen i crank it i let down the back seats so the air escapes through the back seats.
this prevents the boot from bouncing lol and making a huge racket.

Your farting sound is related to air escape thru the valves at the floor of the boot.
Just remove your rear speakers... air escape into the cabin... problem solved.
I'm thinking about my removing my rears and connecting my sub to my Pioneer headunit because atm my subs are connected with the rear speakers. Would that be better?

dude what?
subs shouldnt run directly off the headunit, they need to be connected to an amplifier which receives a signal VIA RCA cables fromt eh headunit

ummm yea... dont think you should be doing that
