hi,
I was looking around for tyres for my euro lux 05 model. Called up Bridgestone Select for the RE001. Was quoted $333/ea for 225/45 R17 and 229/ea for 235/45 R17; on top of that add 65 for alignment, 10 for old tyre scrapping. totals to abt $991 for 4 tyres.

He told me after checking, saying its legal to use the 235/45 on my euro and its also higher in speed rating & cheaper. Need advise.

re001? IN 225/45 IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN 235/45

are you sure you got it the right way around? Sorry unless the reason it's cheaper is because 225/45 is more common than 235/45.

if your oldtyres are still decent why not sell them off for say $50-100 depending on tread life.

BTW what is your question? or you just stating your experience?

Cheers,
Daz

yes.. 235/45r17 tires are usually cheaper than 225/45r71... 'cos the falcodore pair uses 235/45r17.

yeah, he also was a bit confused, but his computer says so...the 225/45 are more ex..unless thay didn't update. Other places cheapest quoted ard $269 not incl align+dispose.

so, based on ppl's experiences here, can i switch to 235/45 from 225/45 17"?

Going 235/45 over 225/45 means the rolling diameter will be larger by 9mm. That is still within legal limits which state that the rolling diameter cannot be larger than 15mm over stock.

I reckon the guy who input the prices did a clerical error.

Also yes you can run it, people say you won't get scrubbage!
I had a quote for 225/40/18 for $355, but still need to check other places on the best price.

As aaronng has mentioned. If unsure use the calculator on the website www.1010tires.com to see how much percentage you are off from stock.

I wouldn't be surprised that 235/45 is cheaper than 225/45.

Even in 16" size, 225/50 is cheaper or the same as 205/55.

235/45 is definately cheaper as it is a much more common size.

More importantly, I don't think you should put a 235/45 on a 7 inch rim.

It will baloon too much and will impact the handling in a negative way. I note that Michelin recommends a minimum of a 7.5 inch rim for a 235/45 with an optimum of 8 inch.

I used to have a 235/45 on a 7.5" rim and even that balooned quite a bit. You can see it in this photo. Stick with 225/45 unless you have 7.5 - it will fit the rim much better.

this was what i was quoted for each:

225/45R17 Bridgestone Adrenalin RE001-
Jax: $289 incl fit/bal/valves
Kmart Tyre: $324 incl fit/bal/valves
Bob Jane: $269 incl fit/bal + $78fnt/rear alignmt + $5tyre disposal
Bridgestone: $333 incl fit/bal + $65fnt/rear alignmt + $10tyre disposal
(but for 235/45R17 cost $229)

Yokohama A.Drive R1-
Jax: $247 incl fit/bal/valves
Bob Jane: $260

Yoko C-drives were more expensive tha the 2 above.

if really 235/45 is not good for the 17" i have, probably go for the Yoko. Any comments? But its only a $10 diff at the end..

Do I really need to align the wheels? What do they do?

After checkin the net, found a couple of interesting tests, here's one:

Mate, you obviously have a very nice car like the rest of us.
Don't skimp on quality when it comes to your tyres. :thumbdwn:

Get the RE001's, I have them and they are great!

i used to have sumitomos and they were really good. Made in Japan too! Unlike the chinese Dunlops that are fitted to my XR6 turbo. They try and downplay it by saying "engineered in europe, made in china".... Either way they are shite.

yeh i read sumitomos were good, but reading the superseded version of HTR Z2 i thought otherwise, but i called a guy and said Z3 was the best in the market but i dont believe it until i try it out. Was quoted $275 for 225/40/18 which is a size larger.....

And as others have said, the price you pay is the quality you get.

Mr Taleb quoted me $355 to get them in for me... but they don't normally stock them.

That's why the price was high. Go for a place that stocks them. I paid $165 for my 16" ones. Cheaper than entry level Dunlops.

I was hoping to get the RE001 too, but my budget is limiting me :(

Have been reading throughout the net, mostly used on Bimmers forums overseas on 3series, M5, M3 etc...and they all said this new version Z3 is pretty good.
They were even mentioned on some S2000 forums. Pretty good i would say for that kinda money. they did mention Sumitomo owns Dunlop but keeps the name for marketing purposes.
here's some for your reading pleasure (old news actually):

Update: Thx for the help and comments. Have decided to go for the Sumitomo. Got the price down to $199/ea for the Z3. They're ordering in for me. Probably next week.

I too have heard and read good things about the Sumitomo Z3s.I'd be interested in your opinion of them once you've had them on for a while.

The minimum recommended rim width for 235/45x17 is 7 1/2 inches. Due to the increased rolling diameter the speed difference at a true 100kph will be 4 kph - meaning you would be at 104 kph.

in reality that would make your speedo reading more accurate, but your rim size is not suitable.

Will it still fit on 7 inch rims?

235/45x17 is not recommended on a 7" rim
