Hi,

Just got my car back from the 10,000KM service using my own oil Motul 8100, after the service with 9700km on my clock now I gotta say there is definitely a BIG improvement with the Motul oil, the shuddering when accelerating from low rpm is barely exist anymore, my car also pulls alot better at lower rpms (1k - 1.5k) I usually never/hardly go into 4th gear when driving at 60km/h due to the shuddering and the lack of power when speed drops below 60 but now its perfect, no problem even accerating from 45-50km at 4th!

I put in Motul Excess 8100 for my 10,000km service too. But I don't recall any major difference... lol

I doubt it was the oil.

mine was like $160. Just had it done like 2 weeks ago. They just changed oil and filter.

Mine was around $145 with my own oil and filter changed, there is definitely a huge noticeable difference after the service, definitely alot smoother in acceleration, didn't change fuel brand (Caltex Vortex 98)

Is it okay to use synthetic oil at 10,000? I was under the impression that its best to wait till later? I'm using Motul 8100 on the CL9 (that has big K's on it) but the CU2 is going in for its 6 month service soon and i would prefer to bring my own oil - just don't know what to use yet!

+1 for Motul?

motul only made a difference in smoothness in acceleration, nothing to do with power performance or shuddering....

i've had the shuddering too before but that depends on how you engage the car into gear.
And if you let the car drop into low revs then the car will shudder.

How much does that Motul oil cost? If it gives you smoother acceleration, I'm gonna give it a go at the next service.

depends which one if your 10k + then go for 8100 Turbolight (semi synthetic) 8100 Xcess (full synthetic) around $45-60 depending on sales.....

Oh ok, not excessively expensive. My next one will be 60K, so I'll definitely try 8100 Xcess. Thanks!

To be honest... no idea. I get my car serviced at the Honda dealership in Rosebery, so I guess it would be some mainstream stuff you can buy off the shelf at Big W or something :)

Any idea what motor oil Honda dealerships normally put in Euros?

I don't know how good Motul would be for your car as a daily driver oil?

I thought dealers uses Honda FEO, which is semi? According to aaronng in the motor oil thread, Motul Excess 8100 compared to high end ($100+) oil would be of no difference for daily street use.

I thought dealers uses Honda FEO, which is semi? You would think so, but no. They just use generic oil just like any other car manufacturer.

That and it's not intended as daily driver oil.

FEO is mineral.
Dealers use what they have in barrels. One dealer I used was using Magnatec.
Motul is more than enough as a daily driver oil. Better than Magnatec (which causes my engine to go rough repeatedly after 7000km)

I've been trialling Mobil Synth S ($32) 10w-40, and what I found was that while it was a good oil, after 6 months (8000km), the oil starts to lose the ability to keep the carbon deposits dissolved in the oil. So there are very fine black specks in the oil when I wipe the dipstick with a tissue. I didn't get this with Castrol Edge 5w-30, 0w-40 and Motul 8100 10w-40.

agreed mainly use magnatec cause it's the cheapest one you can get with barrels i think.

My 50K service is going to be done next Friday.Have been using Elf 5W30 but this time i'm trialing Castrol 0W40.Got it on sale a while back for $58 for 5ltrs.will report back if there's any improvement in performance(i doubt it)drivability, starting etc.

I think any engine will feel smooth straight after oil change despite brand of the oil. Cheap new oil is better than worn, degraded expansive oil.

The only way to find out if any particular oil can make a improvement on smoothness or acceleration is to do an oil-change before the oil in the engine is worn.(say 1 wk or 1 month)..

My local Honda dealer uses Castrol Magnetac.
Recent CL9 120000km major service =$524. CR-V 10000km service = $190. including free loan car.

I was looking at the Castrol website and they didn't have the Castrol Edge
0W40 as a recommended oil for the CL9 Euro. They recommended Magnatec 10W40 or Edge 5W30.

I notice they recommend Castrol GTX3 Modern Engine 10W30 for the CU2. Has anyone used this oil in their CL9?

Just interested did you find any change in performance with the change of oil?

Yeah i think there is a marginal improvement in performance, enough for me to use it again.BTW i've had the 0w40 in now for over 5 mths and noticed NO decrease in performance at all.Not to mention i picked up a 5ltr.bottle a while back on sale for $50.

I've been using castrol edge both 5-30w and 0-40w both are good oils but dont last long and retain smoothness at the 8000km/5 months mark hitting VTEC very often, Changed my oil today to Royal purple 5-30w, noticed a positive change in engine noise and smooth running-ness, will provide a opionion on the oil in due time.

Those oil recommendation things on the website are rubbish. Stick to Edge 5w-30 or Edge 0w-40. Don't waste your time and money on Magnatec 10w-40, or on that shitty GTX3, which is probably one of the worst oils out there that gum up very quickly.

Would one be better than the other? I don't push my car to the red line. I do a couple of short (under 5kms) trips daily for school pick up and drop offs, and my commute to and from work is a 30km all round journey in stop start traffic.

With this sort of driving schedule should I be getting my oil changed under the 10,000km/6 month schedule or the 5,000km/3 month schedule?

How much is Royal Purple?

and if it was castrol edge 5-30W vs Royal Purple 5-30W <--- which is better?

I got my 5L of castrol edge from repco for like $43 lol, wasnt on sale too!

Yes, from best to worst: Edge 0w-40 > Edge 5w-30 > Magnatec 10w-40 > GTX3 10w-30.
10,000km/6 month will still be ok for you.

If Royal Purple is a Class IV with ester additives, then it should be better than Edge 5w-30.

Should still be alright. I was doing 5 minute trips each direction everyday for 1 year on Edge 5w-30. But could be because of only 8000km in that 6 month service interval that the engine was still smooth.

Just put the CU2 in for it's 10K service at Scotts Honda Artarmon.
Now running Motul 8100 Xcess 5w-40. Engine definitely feels freer and smoother.
5 litres $64 at Repco

Royal Purple is better. It's a group IV and V blend as Aaronng said. (PAO + ester).
It's also a lot more expensive.
Motul 300v and Redline race oil are both group V oils but will cost you a lot of money. For a relatively stock street car just stick with the group III & IV blends (Edge, 8100, etc) as you won't notice the difference and would be lucky to gain many benefits.

If you have an opened up engine with some decent mods go the extra mile and use the group V or group IV/V oils as they are designed for maintaining the oil properties at high rpm and temperature.

In relation to the thread though, with such a young engine I'd stick with a semi-synthetic oil at the most for the 10k service. Engines are machined much better these days so there is generally less need for friction wear-in but it's better to be safe than sorry.
