Hi All,
One for all the car audio experts out there...
Looking to upgrade the factory speakers in the Euro to the following;
Front: 6"Splits JBL GTO607C 70 watt RMS 92dB 55Hz-21kHz
http://www.jbl.com/car/products/product_detail.aspx?prod=GTO607C&Language=ENG&Country=AU&Region=EUROPE&cat=COS&ser=GTS
Rear: 6x9's JBL GTO937 100 watt RMS 94dB 50Hz-21kHz
http://www.jbl.com/car/products/product_detail.aspx?prod=GTO937&Language=ENG&Country=AU&Region=EUROPE&cat=MEL&ser=GTS
Basically I want to run them off the factory head unit, I will NOT be using an Amp in this set up. I have spoken to the place that will be installing these speakers (not selling them) and they advised that some OEM head units do not work on 2 Ohm Speakers.
Now, on the JBL site it mentions;
True Four Ohm - GTO speakers can be safely driven by any head unit.
However the spec's state the following;
Impedance: 2 Ohm
So my question is, are they 2 Ohm or 4 Ohm speakers?
Will they run off the OEM Euro head unit?
Does anyone have first hand experience with these speakers?
I trust the above all makes sense...?

First of all... i'd be calling JBL and finding out what impedance that model really is! lol theyre website contridicts itself lol
or go to a shop that has them and chuck a mulitmeter on the terminals and itll tell you the impedance...
as for whether the stock headdeck would run 2ohm speakers... id doubt it... not many stock headdecks can... its pratically a dead short on the speaker outputs... itll most likely kill the amp...

Thanks for your feedback.
I have sent an email to the Australian distributor of JBL, I await there reply.
I will attempt to contact them on monday also.
As for the seller (Strathfield / Ryda) they both say they are ok to use.
As for the installer (autObarn) the question the fact of using them off the standard head unit.
I guess I need to wait until monday...

4 ohm is the norm.

Not recomended.... but you can use the 2 ohm speaker with your stock HU, if you push it, probably you will burn the HU's amp or cause it to thermal shutdown.
Ask the seller what's the different between the 2 ohm speaker and 4 ohm speaker and how will the amp react to it... if he cant answer that, he dont know shit....

I spoke with a technical rep from JBL Aust. (Convoy) today.
He advised that they will be fine off the standard head unit.
They sell thousands of these speakers every year without any dramas...
I guess I should be ok?
In relation to driving the speakers too hard; I general listen to the Stereo at volumes 8 -10. So my listening style is quite moderate to say the least.
I really only want to achieve more crispness and depth of sound to the already good setup.
Let me know your thoughts...

Stick with 4 ohm. It is not a case of overdriving your speakers, but the stock head unit.

Thanks for all the advice guys...
I have decided to stick with 4ohm and just change brands to a very similar specs...
Front: 6"Splits MTX Audio THS 602 65w RMS 92dB 57hz-25Khz 4ohm

Rear: 6x9's MTX Audio THX 693 80w RMS 93dB 38hz-22Khz 4ohm

Now just to get them installed! ;)

I'm interested to see what gains you get off the stock head unit.
Gains are certainly there for the taking, and it is easy to add an amp later too.

Ok, so a liitle slow to add to the thread...
I had the speakers installed about two weeks ago.
Dynamat on the inner and outer skins of the front doors.
Dynamat on the rear shelf and boot lid.
Custom mdf spacers for the front splits.
Also installed my xcarlink (USB).
The overall sound is far better than I ever anticipated.
I am very happy with the end result, nice clean bass and very nice mids and highs!!!

Nice! The dynamat makes a huge difference, and the speakers even more so.
