View Full Version : [CL9] Hood Trim "Blackout" and pics - COLOURMATCH P.4

After blacking out my chrome window surrounds with some black plastic stuff from a sign shop, I decided to apply the same stuff to the hood trim in an attempt to de-chrome even further. I kinda can't justify ordering the proper stuff from the states, or even painting the damn thing to colour match, due to my financial situation (I'm a uni student!)

Now I'm not sure whether the chrome or the black looks 'better' on the car (which is arctic blue), and so i can't decide whether to leave it black or go back to chrome..

From looking at the pics again, I'm kinda thinking the black looks a little out of place. Any opinions?

Cheers

Is it easy to remove?

I think it'd be like peeling a sticker....i tinted mine with tint film (graphite euro). That way it still looked 'stock' but a lot darker...and hence blend it better with my car.

Dude stick with the chrome. Dont ruin the car. If u really have ur heart set on getting rid of the chrome just wait a while and save up to spray it blue.
Just my 2c

Oh and by the way, you are too close to the gutter, i could never do that with my rims lolololol :p

This is mine. See how in the sun it looks like body colour. But in the shade, it has a bit more of a darker black tint to it. But you can see the difference from the chrome. (compare to teh window trim). and no, my car doesnt look like that. its pure stock + body kit. haha. wheels = exy.

That looks. so good. Wish i could afford that bar!

The rims are fine. True, it was a bit close, but the kerb is barely tall enough to clear the rubber as it is. I park there every day!

Cheers for the input. I'll leave it for now (it's just this tape stuff that can be peeled off) and once I'm sick of it, I'll peel it.

Go blue for sure but if you can't do that at the moment go back to chrome IMO.

well IMO you dont notice it when you dont think about it.
But it does look better with body color.

euromandeluxe so random but saw your car today at uni near royal park. the side trim is nice n blacked out, only up close lol. didn't touch your car haha. up front it looks ok but i guess blue is better... your kit is pretty good too, nice sunroof + seat heaters + lux options on a manual haha.

I bought a noname brand fibreglass grill off ebay, drilled holes myself, and swapped it with my oem one. no logos on the front, just black. looks out of place on a red euro... but its different. replica of a mugen grill anyway. took off the oem radiator trim, but no $$$ to order the jdm one so right now, no trim haha. that's probably a bad thing...

Haha, what a coincidence.

Yeah, the side trim is alright from a distance, but there's a lot of dodgy little bits, especially where bits of the stuff overlap. In some sections its bunched up as well, cbf fixing it, that stuff is a total sob to work with. Its like sticky tape, but thinner. Cheers for the compliment though

Your grill sounds interesting, chuck up some pics, I wanna see! Hopefully that radiator trim isn't a problem... :p pics pics pics!

Its some synthetic vinyl stuff (to the best of my knowledge) I grabbed from some sign shop in Moorabbin. They have it in large sheets, and they were nice enough to give me a few off cuts for no charge. Can't remember the address but I imagine other signing shops would have similar (or better) materials.

Sorry to revive my old thread, I just wanted to find out whether or not the chrome on the hood trim is painted, and can be sanded off?

I'm thinking about sanding it off and attempting to colour match it with paint mixed from a spare parts store or something (according to the arctic blue colour code).

Got the idea from this guy at tsxclub:
http://www.tsxclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24785
so simple!

Easily done, right?

Ken-f
19-03-2009, 05:32 PM
just paint over it?

euromandeluxe

I'm thinking the paint won't stick, and it'll chip too easily. Don't want to waste my time.

buy replacement lah

Its something like A$150 from boomplustoys now because of the crap dollar. If there's anywhere else i can get it cheaper, let me know! Otherwise, painting would be like 1/3 the price.

But how much to buy the chrome bit from honda when you're selling the car?

felixd
19-03-2009, 06:14 PM
well on most cases that the paint will chipped that if somebody scratch it or from stone chips. so if you do it right in the 1st place by using the correct paint and techniques it wouldnt chip off easily. by all means i would give DIY job a go :D

I got mine painted over.
Sticks fine, as long as it's been cleaned & primed properly.

yep go blue...idiot, as if you kerbed those 17" rims

I just looked back at this thread for the first time in ages. i LOLed at that. The rims are fine - not a mark :)

Anyway, decided to make a REAL improvement to the hood trim.
I'm gonna go ahead and share what I did cause of boredom. Don't take this crappy fix seriously as it's quite dodgy.

To overcome the 'reverting to stock' dilemma, I decided to spray straight over the black tape I used. I can hear everyone saying "wtfmanlulzwtf it wont stickz", but whatever. If it starts to chip or peel, I'll just redo it!

The original 'out of place' black taped trim:
http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq3/euromandeluxe/angleblack.jpg

Took it off the car, and decided to construct an overdone spraying area in the backyard pagola from about a billion pieces of old newspaper:
http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq3/euromandeluxe/sprayingarearesizedD.jpg
Fail at timesaving.

Here it is.
http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq3/euromandeluxe/hoodtrimblacktapedresize.jpg

To stop unnecessary overspraying, I taped over the back of the thing with masking tape to protect the attaching points of the thing to the thing.
http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq3/euromandeluxe/blackhoodtrimbacktapedresized.jpg

Because I was spraying on plastic tape, I wasn't really sure whether to sand and prime it. Being the noob that I am, I went ahead and did it anyway :)

After 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of paint (mixed at Autobahn in an aerosol spraycan) and a couple of coats of clearcoat (with random sanding inbetween) I was left with this:
http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq3/euromandeluxe/hoodtrimblueresized.jpg

This is the result after putting it back onto the car:

http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq3/euromandeluxe/wholecarfrontwideangleresized.jpg

Much better. :)

Edit: Yes, after looking at that post again, I realise the car needs a wash. Bad.

euromandeluxe - wtfmanlulzwtf it wont stickz!!! :)

nice man makes the car look finished.
btw as long as you prime it, it should be fine.
The only problem is if you use paint on tape or vinyl because of thinners in the paint it can shrivel it to cause bubbling effect.

11-04-2009, 11:27 AM
LOL 5am post ftw.

Cheers guys, hopefully the chippage isn't too bad. The finish isn't as perfectly smooth as the paint finish on the hood of the car - it's only noticable from really close. I tried sanding back the clearcoat with 1200 grit but it ends up looking scratched which is f***ed up. I'll just leave it for now, noone will notice (except random Ozhonda members LOL).

Looks so much better - she doesn't have a moustache anymore =)

Do you mean these things:

They were on the car when we bought it. I think the previous owner imported them from... somewhere?

Dunno, but I like them. Too low to have any functional use though lol

how do you actually take off the chrome strip? bolts or clips?

white_ep3_civic
07-03-2011, 07:49 AM
The grille strips? The bonnet has 4 small bolts under the bonnet and the grill has to be taken off and that chrome bit is also bolted in. You have to be very gental with them as they snap easy.
