hey guys, do u guys know where the ivtec solenoid is for the r18a?

what are u tryin to do

Probably what I've been asking for months. Wanted to have a LED indicator to know when i-vtec is active...

when can you really feel i-vtec kick in?

markCivicVti
16-12-2008, 05:33 PM
LOL.... i-vtec on the R18a isn't the kind of vtec ur thinking about.

black8thgen
16-12-2008, 05:39 PM
oh.. so what do u mean by when ivtec is active on the r18a?

Search it... but its on at low revs.. low load.. up till 2.5k or there abouts. It's a fuel economy thing. SOHC engines can't have the badass vtec... then again its overrated.

ohh thats what that meant on wiki... lol =.=.

alright thanks haha

lol shove it in ur ecu.

ej20i
16-12-2008, 08:25 PM
yea im going to put an vtec indicator...shove it in the ecu??where tho??

R18s not worth detecting when vtecs on...cos wen 'vtec' has engadged its for the economy mode... so unless u wanna kno when it kicks in to save fuel then yeh...

yeh the guys above with their posts about the ivtec in the R18 is right... its only used for economy.. basically the ecu detects when you need power or when youll be cruising.. adjusts the vtec-e mechanicsm (economy lobe) to trigger fuel economy mode (i think 12v operation in lean mode and 16v for normal), while also detecting when to change the throttle butterflies behaviour... thus its 'intelligent' getting the badge of i-VTEC.... basically a newer version of the old vtec-e mechanism in the jdm d15b... summary from temple of vtec

heres more indepth from temple of vtec dood... http://asia.vtec.net/Engines/RiVTEC/index.html

I've known about the i-vtec implementation on the R18a long ago.. and still want an indicator... partly bling, but in all honesty it would be nice to know when it is in the economy mode.

i'll admit it...just for ricey shit man

hold on... if i-vtec was on for most of the time for saving petrol, doesnt it mean that the light indicator (if you install one) will always turn on? dat will look funny!!! :p

btw is i-vtec in FD1 and FD2 the same? or FD2 i-vtec is like the original vtec?

markCivicVti
17-12-2008, 01:13 PM
FD2 is DOHC.. so more like normal vtec. And yes the light will be on most of the time... so dont get a big one... and hide it if u gonna get embarassed.

so if I installed on mine, the lights will only on when I hit high RPM?

Edit: Found some info... the vtec light will be on around 3k rpm - 4k rpm, not on high rpm...

u could put an inverter circuit with the light so it turns on wen i-vtec is off

I-VTEC is at low RPM between 2.5k - 4k, although VTEC does come in at 5500 RPM even tho you can't really hear it, when your in 3rd and gunning it down the track u can definately hear a difference (even tho power isn't noticable).

^ Not quite correct. there's no normal vtec on the SOHC FD1s. There is something else that has a similar effect of combining two torque curves in that region.. I forget what it's called... but check the temple of vtec technical article on the R18a.

how was wakie fallenangel?

FallenAngel

i'm quite sure that its vtec in that upper range as there was a definate sound difference at the range.

Wakefield was awesome and i also got to drive in the wet and have some fun =D

For those who don't quite understand how the i-vtec works on the R18a (in our FD1) engine.

http://asia.vtec.net/Engines/RiVTEC/index.html

Conclusion: For a economically orientated engine it's pretty kick-ass!!

wet wakefield is always fun...im going this monday...any ecu pinouts yet for the ivtec??

Im with Fallen Angel here, i have noticed now since my car has done 50k after 5500rpm its starting to sound like the old Vtec.

I have a Injen CAI maybe thats why?

markCivicVti

Not even possible in SOHC engine. I know what you guys mean... there's sorta a point where it slightly changes sound and acceleration, but whatever it is it ain't old school vtec.

FallenAngel
19-12-2008, 03:39 PM
I also have the Injen intake =] but i haven't actually researched into this area so i can't definately say that its VTEC. Although it just points in that direction. I might do abit more research about it.

its sohc... It can't be vtec ffs

So what do you classify the D15B as having? :p

dahon

go the jdm d15b!

FallenAngel

Agreed with aaronng with the d15b...

Also SOHC engine heads has an advantage over DOHC engine heads in terms of size because its narrower and lighter...

but theres is no such thing as the aluminium thingy in our engine...or i cant spottted it?

aaronng

It's somewhere. Have you checked the back of the engine?

aaronng

Not that easy to find on an R18A. Even on a K-series, it is hidden all the way at the back next to the headers.
