Illegal if your car doesnt come with them standard, just like any other car part, if you replaced it with aftermarket item you can get done for it, you plan on installing, I suggest trying to tuck the ballasts

yes this is correct. AFAIK no aftermarket HID is ADR compliant except those tested with the new cars that came with them. To get ADR compliance with HIDs, light housings have to be designed in a certain way.

Plus headlight colours in general aren't legal past around 6000kelvin (can't remember exact.. maybe 5700k) as anything above 6000k is well in the blue tinge vicinty....

Any car that doesn't come with HID's is illegal, plain and simple.

You can try as much as you want to make it legal, but it's not possible.

in the instance if you have a audm dc2 and you convert it to jdm front and ilstall HID... would this be legal? as the jdm dc2 came factory with HID?

No it still won't be legal because technically your car is still classified/registered as an Australian Domestic DC2, which never came with HID's as standard so you can still be defected.

the point Djbinh made is correct. Even if you did install them you'd need to retrofit a sprayer mechanism for them so they can be cleaned. This is part of the reason a car needs to come with HIDs from the factory to be legal.

So even if it was possible for you to get HIDs approved on your car, the cost and the amount of work required would exorbitant

For a car to have "legal" HID's, The car must have HID projectors which are designed for the HID light rather than just halogen. Also, it must have the washers + an autolevelling system. IT then needs to be engineered.

Eg, if you had a euro and u wanted to put HID's, it would be illegal as the projectors which come with the car are designed for a halogen bulb and not an HID bulb. You can tell if u put an HID KIT on. ON my mazda 3, because the lense is NOT designed for the HID's, the cutoff point is not sharp

The 2 other ones in my opinion arnt really nessessary. Early BMW's which came with HID's only had the projectors.

Install at your own risk.. but.. HID's are HOT =P Install them and adjust them urself and cops wont bug you. I've gone through SOOO many RBT when coming home from work, especially this christmas and not ONE police officer has said anything =)

Yeah most cops wouldn't have the faintest idea about whether or not they are HID's. You should be rite, but you do get the odd one that will stuff ya for it
