Should try searching first, little bit of trial and error will get you plenty of posts covering the same questions you are asking

dohc craps on sohc. sohc is like 'has vtec come on?' dohc w/ intake exhaust ' who kicked me in the back?"
dohc ftw.
i'd personally get whichever one was in better condition if you don't have a favourite model from the 2. especially service history. inspect everything from bushes, coolant quality (those with water in it just don't care! 20 bucks for coolant too much bother to protect from corrosion) oil leaks etc, to interior cleanliness. people that have clean cars tend to have pride in them and look after them alot better. straight panels and previous accident evidence (miscoloured panels/bumpers and signs guards etc been removed etc)
both are good cars and as said before those that a close to stock engine wise should provide many years faithful service.

OP which state are you in?
If its the black VTI i went and saw DO-NOT get it.
VTi-R's are a premium insurance vehicle, especially for the young 'uns.
Most of these vehicles will have come up to their 100,000Km major service. Timing belts and such.
Check for this or budget for it into the price.
Nick.

my mate has a eg5 vti with mild mods (exhaust intake leads etc ) and it keeps up with another one of my mates who owns a em1 vtir.

I can see the eg vti giving the Em1 a run for it's money, being a lighter car
I'd just buy an EK VTi-R for the package (sunroof, dohc engine, nice firm seats), but if you wanted a Vti, the EJ8 (pre face EK4 front) coupes are cheap to get and worth considering as well

EM1 not that good, its pretty heavy for what it is so that doesn't quite help with the B16A2 being a torqueless nutter, you feel that you have to spank it really hard to go anywhere with it =|
So with only half throttle, I'm not surprised the EG with a D was able to keep up or beat the EM1...
Guess thats why I opted for my AE111...
