Hey everyone, My name is Chris and I am new to this forum... I have recently had my car written off, and i have been looking at some civic turbo's.. I was wondering why some people a turboing the SOHC motor's and not so much DOHC motors? How much boost can they handle, since alot off the cars i have seen havent had any internal engine work done? I have come across one civic which has had D16A8 twin cam engine put in aswell as a turbo kit, It's what i am after, Its just alittle far away... hope you can understand what i am saying.

d16s are strong and can handle alot of boost. people turbo them to bring them up to par with DOHC motors lol. the DOHC motors are already very good and generally dont need turbo's

because people go either of 2 ways, turbo their existing D or upgrade to a B because its a more powerful platform, then have the option to boost their B later on for even more power like me :D

Personally I wouldn't boost a B-series unless i strengthened the engine with sleaves and forged internals. D-series on the otherhand take a lot to kill. There are a few turbo B's out there like dean's beast running on stock internals but they are only weekend cars.

lol same as mine :D weekend warrior lol you can run 10psi fine everyday on a B series motor... just know how to take care of it... i dont thrash mine very much, maybe take it to redline once or twice a week...

i was looking in2 forced inducing my d16y4 a while back and was warned by a few work shops that any more than 8 psi through a internally standard d series will see conrods being blown sideways through the block?
any truth to these rumours?
just putin in my 2 cents

i heard the conrods are good for about 160kw. whatever psi that equates to i suppose. i wouldnt know i havent turboed my d16....yet :P

I also heard this... although some other engines are also built tough and can handle a fair bit of boost on standard internals eg. RB30

You boost whatever motor you like, D, B, K. They will last as long as each other. Buy the right parts, get it installed and tuned by the right people and you'll have no problems.

Ive never seen that happen, happened to a buddy's 1.5L Mirage engine, lol, then again when compared it's smaller than the D16y4

x2 what Dean said :D

in the end it all comes down to the quality of the parts and work which is determined by money spent! all i have to say is do it right do it once!

see what has been done, the power figures, reliabilty and money spent (there is always a list of components. google there worth on average and add them up). choose what you think is best for you with your goals in mind, power vs money spent vs reliabilty etc and stick to your planned build. it will take time but hey how much time does it take to plan the build of a stock car by engineers. no where near the amount you will take.

i myself would go a b series preferably b18c7 as this to me would be the ideal base for a build like deans. i'd cream myself if that was neatly tucked under my hood. love your work man!
