Hi,
I have just noticed that when i got my car serviced, they have overfilled my engine with oil. from the top notch on the dipstick, they have overfilled to about 1/2 inch above it. Will this do damage to my engine?? any side effects?

Take it back and ask them why and ask them to fix it. If anything happens to your engine due to there fault it will be hard to prove a warranty claim . better safe than sorry

make em drain the oil to the correct level. 1/2 inch alot to be over
excess oil will just burn off no harm just keep an eye on it, mind u it may just smoke a bit due to burning it off.......

Check the oil level with the engine running to see how bad it really is...
Btw... Do it really quickly of not at all... ;)

but will this excessively wear out my rings or seals?

i learnt that a long time ago, i overfilled my oil by half a litre due to the slope of driveway and 3 days later it was blowing oil out the exhaust very excessively, i thought i had done some catastropic damage! Just drain the excess, and if your smoking oil now, you probably will be for around 2 weeks, took me 2 weeks to get rid of the excess oil.

where was it serviced at?? im getting mine done soon, hope its not at the same place u went too.
Bottom Dot to Top dot is around 1 quart which is around 1 litire. Too much oil will cause air bubbles to form (Foaming) and thus not lubricating properly. Also as someone said, excessive blue smoke will come out of the exahust. So bottom line... just drain it till it reaches the top dot.

hmm ok i've finally drained the oil. About a litre. now the oil is between the top mark and the bottom mark...its not at the top mark...just below it...about 3mm below...my question is, is this level safe for the car???

in the middle is the middle.
ie between the too low mark and the too high mark.
it doesnt take a genius to work out that this is safe.

yeah i knew that...just wanted to get a confirmation, coz some people say that if the engine was built for 4L of oil then its got to be filled up with 4L of oil...no more no less...

just for future reference the Factory service manual does state that the B18C block takes exactly 4.0l for oil change with filter...
(B18B takes 3.8l for oil change with filter)

from what i heard, your car should be blowing some smoke from your exhaust
i gather, it wnt be the best for your engine and/or car

not really
I suggest you remove some oil

you will blow smoke out your exhaust but it also raises the chances of hurting your seals.... ive over filled a couple of times (mainly because the penzoil oil i used to buy didnt have any indicators) and ive drained it back down straight away. Its not really worth any risk in my opinion, its a simple 30 sec job to drain some of the oil back out....

Just fill it between the two dots or risk damage. Not rocket science!
