painting plastic side skirts

hey i've got a 97 prelude.
it's got the black plastic sides skirts.

i have been told they can't be painted. the paint will crack/peel after a while. is the shop for real or were they just lazy to paint it?
they said dirt/oil has built up over time and t's not a good idea to paint.

You can sand it back down yourself and use plastic primer to primer it up then paint it yourself.

might have been lazy, should be able to paint after sanding away all the built up dirt/oil

painted my side mouldings yest and finished today. first I wiped the mouldings with meth to get rid of dirt and oil, then just primered it after light sanding to get rid of imperfections.

baah its all bull maaan.

you can do what other said.
make sure u sand it down clearly step by step
use the rough sand paper till the smoothest.. i think grid 1500?

then apply 2-3 coat primer than sand it down ;) (lightly)
apply 3-4 coat of paint

then there you go! your new side skirt!

it takes time but worth it lol

just start with 300 grit - skip to 600.. then 1000-1200 then use grease & wax remover and should be fine

yeah i will give it a try when i'm free on a weekend.
so sand with 300, 600,1200-1500 grit. clean it and prime a few times
between each layer of plastic primer what grit do i use? just the 1200-1500?

painting shouldn't be too hard. i've done my valve cover already.

by the way what's a good place to get paint mixed?
my car is green.
also i need primer/clear coat spray so i might get em at autobarn.

each primer just use 1000 or 1200 ..

i use 1000 and soften it up with 1200

Yes, your painting the same material.

the reason why the person said the paint will peel is because most people paint it straight on or use shit, very shit plastic primer.
Use a good primer, lots of coats, then paint.
remember, the golden rule of painting pretty much anything, preperation is basically more important then painting.

too true..u cant take shortcuts with prepping

agreed! the result of the work will depend upon how well the prepping is done.
every little bump, chip, scratch will show up if you paint straight on without sanding out the imperfections.

just get your paint code and go to autobarn or supercheap, if they dont have the colour in a can already..autobarn should be able to mix it up. also would prefer to not use clear plastic primer as i found it really difficult to see primer surface result from sanding.
