generally no as ur OEM ones should be fine but since your doing a turbo i'd recommend you might as well put some ARP studs in

Same as stated above but if your removing your head bolts its always a good idea to replace with new oem or stronger.

when do people usually replace or use aftermarket head studs / bolts
only doing a head gasket or when ever removing the head?

never reuse head stud bolts , they stretch and weaken over time

I reused 240,000km old Honda head-bolts around 2 years ago and they've been going strong ever since. Including a 1000km Wakefield trip last year where the engine's durability was really tested.
I have faith in high tensile steel. I also have a lot of spare time and am good at pulling heads however, so if you don't and aren't, perhaps new bolts are in order :D

i thought every time you change your head gasket, you need to change these bolts. can my friend change the head gasket and still use OEM bolts

the honda manual states you have to replace the bolts , once taken out. They are designed for ONE use only.
You CAN reuse these bolts at your own risk.

what are the stud specs for ARP?
what happens if you were to use the stock torque specifications?
Bowzer
20-02-2009, 02:43 PM
the head studs come with a spec sheet with the torque specs on them... There are 2 different specs based on what you put on the threads... ARP molylube (the grey looking stuff) is different to using engine oil ... make sure the threads on the block are cleaned out with brake cleaner and compressed air so its free from dirt and grime the studs go into the block hand tight but so be sure the threads are nice and clean...
so recap follow the oem sequence in the service manual but use the arp torque specs on the spec sheet depending on the lube your using

Urm People, Stock head bolts are seriously fine, unless your planning on running like 15pounds+ of boost their shouldnt be a problem not matter how old they are, high tensile steel is HIGH TENSILE STEEL!

Yes,
If they are in good condition & haven’t been stretched. Absolutely.
There’s no sense in prophylactic use of over engineering on a roadie with a tight budget.
Yes new head bolts are better that reusing your original ones…
How much better is up for debate.
In reality, if you properly inspect the ones you have & they’re fine to go again.
There is now way of measuring the benefit of new bolts over good 2nd hand ones.
You hip pocket tells you the 2nd hand ones are better.
For the cost of new stock bolts you’d be silly not to use ARP studs.
For interest sake:
OEM Honda DC5 engine manual even tells you to re-use the head bolts after inspection.
Many other Honda engine manuals, B-series included make no mention of head bolt replacement.
In any case,
For easy inspection, use a veriers caliper & check the diameter of the bolt through the threaded section. The diameter should be the same along the threaded length & the same for all bolts.
If there is any change in diameter, replace the bolt.
If there is any damage on the shaft, thread or head. Replace the bolt.
Hope that helps
Cheers
Adrian
