firstly, you can polish paint protection. Scratch x will do more harm than good on a dark coloured paint job when applied by hand. what you need is a nice glazing polish.
it is difficult and time consuming getting those fine scratches out by hand. the use of a machine buffer is essental if you want a professional job but you need to know what you are doing as you can do more damage to the paint.
If i were you, get some meguiars swirl remover, apply it by hand then get some meguiars NXT next generation tech wax and apply it by hand also. use microfibre cloths to wipe off the polish. Expect the job to take 3-4 hours for it to be done properly.

how's your scratches going? I find that if they are not too deep, you can mask your scratches using a good wax. I used Meguiar's NXT Tech wax on my scratches from the cats and they were hidden very well!
From memory reagon used a cutting compound when polishing his car - causing the scratches. I wouldn't stuff around trying to fix it - sure try Scratch X and NXT - but if that doesn't work take it to a professional.

yfin, do you know how bad the paint has to be before the pros resort to reapplying the clearcoat? How much would that cost for the bonnet, for example?
Nope - h22a accord is a professional detailer. I'll let him answer that question.
so if you got paint protection on ur car.. you cant polish it ? im kinda lost.. and if it does have paint protection.. how long does it take for this protection to wear out/off ??

I had a stone hit 2 days after I got my Euro on the drives side just above the door handle pretty bad. I took it to my father in laws body shop they put some touch up paint, clear, then cut and polished it now unless I told you about it you would not be able to tell. I would recommend get a professional to look at it.

basically the clear coat has a thickness, measured in microns, it has to be a scratch you can easily feel with your fingernail before it needs painting/clearcoating.
if its just minor scratches/swirls/scuffing, they can be buffed, glazed and polished/waxed.
if u use a cut and polish by hand on a nice new car or any car with a good 2 pac paint ( euro paint for eg) you will make the paint cloudy. U could improve it by trying nxt wax www.meguiars.com.au (http://www.meguiars.com.au) or take it to a detailer or smash shop and they can fix it for you.
good luck.
and yes, paint protected cars can be buffed etc etc, although, the area u buff will have no paint protection on it anymore so either, dont worry bout it or get it reapplied.

Thanks h22a. Mine has paint protection, but I realised that it doesn't serve any purpose other than to slow down paint discolouration. I tried some polish to remove tree sap but it was no help. A claybar was the only thing that worked. After getting out all the tree sap, bird poo and bug shit, I am using NXT on top now. Much better and it hides my minor swirls. So far I've had to use touch up paint on a small 1mm spot on the rear bumper. I think eventually I will have to visit a pro. detailer because of the environment my car is in. Birds, bugs, cats and trees...
