I have for the past year ran a fully ester synthetic 10w-40 oil in my d16a8 with now 260 xxx k's on the clock and with my 20L drums all now empty i am looking at buying a 20 in a mineral oil 20-50 for my ageing engine. i've done a search and found little info about if this will cause any harm.

i remember reading somewhere about how one or the other dissolves buildup in the engine that can be closing certain gaps but in doing so creates a better seal or something in the engine and changing oil disolves that. i think syn oils disolve min oil build up so switching down to min oil should be fine i just want to confirm.

side Q, is 20-50 too thick for a d16a with 260k kms what grade should i be looking at. i know the meaning of the numbers 10w -weight of oil 40 - running viscosity. what's on step up from 10 40. i know there is 15 40 but that is just a heavier oil with the same viscosity.

10w means that the at -18ºC, the oil viscosity is similar to a 10 SAE weight oil at -18ºC. The "w" signifies that it is suitable for winter use. The 40 means that at 100ºC, the oil viscosity is similar to a 40 weight at 100ºC.

So for your car located in Brissy where it doesn't reach freezing temperatures, the 2nd number is more relevant. I'd use 10w-40, 5w-40 or 0w-40. If you were burning oil, then go for a 10w-50 as a band aid fix.

It will be fine. Probably Cheaper too.
Just ensure you keep to the oil change schedules.

That should be fine, seeing that Honda now asks for the oil filter to be changed every 20k with new cars, which is too long in my opinion.
