Hey guys

Basically as title states. We have a 96 EK1 Sedan with power windows. All windows work except the drivers. Anyone know any basic things to diagnose this problem or where to start?

Regards Lyle

easiest and quickest way to fix this is to spray Silicon spray up and down on the rubber on both sides of the window...

cause generaly what happens is the rubber dries out over time, and also when you park it in the sun, this causes the glass to grip to the rubber...

silicon spray will help make the glass slide over the rubber...

you ca get silicon spray from repco, supercheap ect

check fuses?
when you use the swtich see if there is power going to the regulator motor, if there is, i'd say motor is stuffed.
to test the motor put a 12v source to either of the wires on the regulator motor and see if it goes up or down, then put the 12v source to the other wire and see if it does the opposite, then your regulator motor is okay.
so if motor works, switch is your problem,

Unless you've been playing with the wires, and cut it, or damaged it.
lol.

Start with the basics - don't get carried away with jumping to conclusions like most people here do.

For starters: If your window is working, but just jamming as kaotic explained above - lube the window guides.

If it's not working altogether - read on...

All you need is a bit of knowledge and you can actually structure a diagnosis plan, instead of just throwing new parts at the car hoping that it will fix the issue.

If you've got a Honda workshop manual or haynes/gregory's manual for the car then you've got a wealth of information at your fingertips. Wiring diagrams are a godsend!

Anyway, without the assistance of a manual or wiring diagram, you can start your diagnosis plan by having a think about how the system works and try to gather all the information about the fault that you can. Do this by taking note of any events occurring when you try to use/switch the failed consumer (listen for relays clicking or motors trying to move etc).

In your case; seeing as the other windows are working it's obvious that the fuse(s) and relay(s) are ok and power is getting to the switch.

Can you hear the window motor trying to move the window? If so, it's probably a case of a buggered window regulator (lifting & lowering mechanism) - not electrical.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If not, remove the door card and have a look at the window motor plug. Check the condition of the connector (looking for loose or corroded pins/wires). Now using a 12v test light you can check power to the window motor (you may need to use some wire to 'probe' into the pins at the connector [on the loom side - not the motor side of the connector/plug].

NOTE: The way a basic motor works is power is applied to one terminal (Eg: Terminal 1) of the motor and earth is applied on the other side (Eg: Terminal 2) - The motor spins (Eg: clockwise). But if the polarity is reversed (Eg: Terminal 1 is now earthed and Terminal 2 is now getting power) - the motor will spin the opposite way. In our example - anti-clockwise.

Probe one of the pins with the +'ve and the other pin with the -'ve points of the test light. While holding the test light points on the pins of the connector activate the switch UP for a second and then DOWN for a second.

If the light illuminates then power is getting to the motor. That being said - the test light will only light up when the switch is activated one way or another. Reversing the polarity of the test light confirms the other switch stage. So swap the +'ve and -'ve points on the pins and re-activate the switch UP for a second and the DOWN for a second. This will confirm that the switch is working for both UP and DOWN stages of the switch, also confirms that all of the connections and wiring are intact up to that point - now leading you to believe that the window motor has failed.

You could double check by using the motor from the opposite side of the car to test (providing that the plug and pin connections match). If the motor from the other side of the car works on the drivers side connector - then the drivers window motor is 'FUBAR'.

If your test light does not illuminate on either stages of the switch (even after reversing the polarity of your test light) then you need to work your way back down the circuit. Checking the routing and condition of wires as you follow the loom back toward the switch (checking condition of any connectors along the way). Check the pins and wire condition at the switch. If the pins and wires appear to be ok - then it's time to open up the switch and check the contacts for the drivers window motor loom pins.

In your case it's safe to assume that power is getting to the switch (because the other windows are working) it is now an issue of power and/or earth not getting from the switch to the motor.

Why do you need to remove the regulator/lifter rails?

But here go anyway:
Once you've undone the motor you should be able to slide the glass up and down the rails by hand. Position the glass so you can see how it is held onto the lifter rails. Not sure on EG but it should either be a push-type clip or possibly bolted or clamped. Undo/unclip the glass from the rails and slide the glass up to the top of the window frame. You might want to get some race-tape and tape the glass over the window frame (so it won't fall down and smash) - or you could remove it completely.

Once the glass is out of the way it's just a matter of unbolting the regulator/lifter rails and pulling them out. One side at a time, usually.
