I have a 97 CRX with a B16A engine. It is getting a high pitch squeeling noise that sounds very much like a loose fan belt etc. Thats what my mechanic thought so we have replaced: All belts, Timing Belt, Water pump, Alternator and the sound still occurs. It happens on idle and under slight acceleration, but on higher throttle it goes away. It normally happens when it is cold but often happens when it is warmed up. My mechanic says that it sounds like a possible bearing noise but he changed the bearings when he did the timing belt. So we are down to a clutch swap (possible clutch thrust bearing?). Any other suggestions?????
Please PM me your suggestions! HELP!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!

what bearing did he change with the timing belt??

there are no bearings to change with a timing belt swap - he might be referring to aircon clutch bearing or power steering pump bearing
So ,the noise is EXACTLY relative to engine RPMS ?
IE it changes or increases as the revs go up

maybe it was the tensioner he replaced?
If he told you he changed the crank bearings he's got you runnin in circles.
if its the clutch throwout bearing it should only happen with the clutch is depressed. If its the pilot bearing on the flywheel it will happen all the time that the clutch is out. (and should go up with engine RPM)

yes sorry it was the tensioner my mistake!
It doesnt matter if the clutch is depressed or not, and it doesnt change with RPM, other than the point that at higher RPMs it goes away. Normally occurs at idle or in neutral though, or at lower revs, but it doesnt change (as in get louder etc) with revs.

define 'bearing noise'
belts probably aren't tensioned properly

the noise which is a "bearing type noise" - as above means belts are over tightened

yah... gotta define it more.... i'll throw another possibility out... the mrs gsi teg had a "bearing noise" ... squeal actually.... turned out to be the power steering pump on the way out....
do a quick test for me and put load on the power steering by full locking it to both sides and let us know if the noise changes.... if it doesn't then you can pretty much rule out p/s
Grab a bar of soap and rub it on the drive side of your belts, even if off in tension, it will eliminate them if they dont go silent.

could be the oil pump

There is also a tensioner bearing that tensions the A/C belt, and i guess there's also the water pump...
Get a long screwdriver, and stick the handle towards your ear, then touch various points on the engine and see where exactly the sound is coming from.
