Hey guys,
I have noticed that my tyres have started to rub against my chasis (16" +35 on 205/45/16) when I go over bumps fast/hard and I'm wondering which is the recommended solution.
1) New rims - Easy fix but expensive and I like mine. :D
2) New springs - But possibly similar problem and I might try and save up for coils. (That'll take a bit though)
3) Let it rub away - Going to Lorne (along the Great Ocean Road) in a few weeks and I'm worried it might rub heaps on the way. Worry or not?
Any suggestions? I also noticed that behind the wheels (mainly the back right) there is some black "splash back" that may be from the tyres. (Or could have just been from a dirty road but it's pretty black)

on the guards or the actual chasis?

Any cons to rolling your guards?

Er...not sure. The part covering the wheel? I can only hear it when I go over a bump at the moment, can't see any noticeable wear yet since it's only happened a few times.

depending how much needs to be rolled and if you take it to a dodgy place, the paint may crack

The black splash may be just run off from my tyres since I just had my whole car cleaned and my tyres blackened. (Maybe).
I also just grabbed a torch and had a peek under above the wheel (under the car) and noticed some silver scratching on the black surface. This may be the rubbing area?

Wouldn't that make my speedometer/odometer inaccurate?

No, not if its just the tyre being changed, and not if it isn't by a large difference. e.g. rolling diameter increased or reduced by 2inches or more.
u need to find where its scrubbing or else you may not address the problem. I'd say for that drive u plan on doing you'd be safe enough to not worry about it. It isn't too urgent if its only when u go over bumps fast. However the more weight will make it wanna scrub more.

I got the same problem except i know what went wrong lol.
I bought springs over the net and they sent me the ones that dropped my car 2 inches which was way too much, my car is extremely low now and every bump i go over fast it hits and you can smell the tyres burning away.
If you have got bigger wheels or have lowered your car like i did, the shocks need to be changed to harder ones.
If its only when you go over bumps then i would just save up and get proper coil overs, thats what im doing, except make sure you get the right ones lol.
And make sure they are harder enough to solve the problem................ Would hate to spend thousands and you still have a problem with them..............

lol 2inch drop and ur struggling with speedbumps, mate, i'd go back to stock springs/shocks. 2inches shouldn't be that bad what are you scraping? an aftermarket bodykit?

if your planning diy to roll your guards. heat the paint with a heatgun to prevent cracking, or leave to professionals. i think is something like 200-250 pair.

Hmmm don't do that, if you want your guards rolled come to me and I will do it for waaayyyyy less. No guarantees on paint crackage though :p.
If your tyres are rubbing somewhere jack up the car, remove the wheel, and look for where paint has been rubbed off or for signs of rubbing on fender liners. Remove offending material either by cutting/removing fender liners, rolling guards, or pounding sheet-metal with a big hammer. Making wheels fit properly always requires a big hammer.

Its not the speed bunps that are scraping, its not even the body of the car lol
Its the wheel that bounces up and hits the hub because the shocks are too soft, i just replaced the springs and left the stock shocks............

Well I've got a guy coming to roll my rear guards soon (should be here in 15 min). He's been highly recommended and is doing it for $150 for both since he is coming out to Doncaster from Tullamarine. He guarantees no paint cracking so I guess we'll see if doing this fixes anything. :)

yeah i had this problem, best thing to do is what Tayl said which is to buy coilovers and stiffen up the suspension.

I'll get pics up later if you guys really want it but there's not that much to see. Took a couple of hours but he rolled the guards using a heat gun and a roller thingy and also cut out a little piece of the guard + sanded it down heaps. There's heaps more space now but I haven't tried it with a full load yet, but looks alright.
I'll probably pick up some coilovers later in the year, but for now this seems to have fixed the problem. :D
