G'day guys,

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum, yet I am a proud Euro owner.
I don't know if its just Brisbane, but I have noticed I have struggled to find 98 Octane petrol in many different service stations.
Every 95 Octane has pumps being locked down.

Just curious to know if anyone has experience this too?

This happened a while ago in Sydney, Dude sucks to be you, just have to stick with the regular stuff + octane booster till its all good again, but in sayng that running the car on 95 RON isnt the end of the world either, the cars computer compensates for the crappy fuel so you might feel a slight drop in performance, SLIGHT

I've been able to find premium at other outlets. but i was talkin to the guy that owns my local BP and he said supply should be getting back to normal now.

I haven't been able to get any on the cheaper days for about a month now. I had to go to Mobile to get mine.

Edit: I'm brissy southside.

mobile 8000 is not that bad. Im finding BP ultimate, the only petrol stations selling 98 in supply. I have no problems with it.

I didn't mean to say mobil is bad. I just never go there (until now). I actually went to BP, because the 2 other caltexs were out, then BP was out as well..

Same down here in Melbourne. Theres been a shortage of 98 Octane be it BP, Shell or Mobile...well least down the S.E side anyway.

They said it was because they stopped digging for 98 Octane because of the financial crisis.

you don't "dig" for 98 octane.

I have found that BP stores are out of BP premium ultimate around SE Melbourne (Wantirna/Ferntree Gully) but have had no problem getting Vortex 98 from Caltex outlets.

traralgon bp has been out of ultimate for at least 3 weeks now

been filling up with vpower recently.

The Brisbane supply of Caltex Vortex 98 appears to be getting back to normal. The recent shortage was due to a misshap at the Caltex Lytton refinery. I believe this refinery also produces BP's Ultimate. I prefer to use these two fuels. I had to fill up with Mobil 8000 over new year as it was all I could get locally. Initially I was a bit worried (getting out of the comfort zone), but can report that performance seemed the same.

True. It's formulated from an additive extracted from the Rambutan tree in Malaysia; not unlike the spaghetti tree of Sicily and North Africa which is a hairier version of the same species.

I can still get 98 from caltex and shell and mobil in SE melb yesterday. I know of shortages in brisbane due to problems at some refineries, but have not heard of shortages in sydney and melb. What i observed is, some stations put 'not in use' signs on some premium pumps regularly, every tuesdays and wednesdays. When you ask, they will give some 'faulty pump' 'out of petrol' reasons. I recall a few months ago, on today tonight, some stations are faking those reasons, to prevent people from using those pumps... Limiting 'loses' during those heavily discounted days.

That wouldn't surprise me. My BP had all 95's down yesterday but all 98's working. The tanker was there at the time so maybe it was filling the 95's and I'm just sceptical.

is that why fuel prices havent gone under $1/L for the past few days!!!

has anyone noticed that with the recent drop in normal unleaded prices, 98ron has jumped up from the normal 10c or 11c price difference.

been to a few mobil's and caltex which previously has 98ron 11cents more than 90ron unleaded but now have jumped to 14cents and 13cents

What I was meant to say is that you don't specifically dig for 98 octane petrol. You either stop digging for oil or stop making it by distillation.

yes. the difference was increased when 91ron petrol hit $1.7/ltr. it has not reduced since then.

the price differentiation used to be:
6 cents between 95 and 91; and
4 cents between 98 and 95.

The BP on Woodville rd near Parramatta is out of Ultimate, so i have to wait and hopefully they get it soon, i'm running low already.

No shortage here in WA, I can still get it at my little shithole of a town.
But I guess they do make it over here and all.....

The Euro is designed to run on 95 & does so with no problems, so I can't see the point of spending extra for 98. Personally I use Caltex Vortex 95 only, the car runs great while returning unbelievable economy.

personally i think its starting to pick up ...
i live on brisbanes south west, and around the oxley, sherwood, indooroopilly, forest lake, mt gravatt, sunnbank, calmvale, browns plains, I have experienced the "pump not in use" tag on many of the 98 octane pumps.
Last week, was in chermside, and stopped at the caltex servo there, no 98 octane.

I've used 98 ever since I've got the car. Maybe its a sign to get on the 95.

???
I guess you're not in Brisbane?

I'm a dedicated Vortex 98 user, but have been hard pushed to find it anywhere lately - thanks to the "mishap"

Shell Canon Hill seems to have a steady supply of V-Power though, similarly priced. I won't use BP out of principal - bloody rip off!!

This Wednesday Caltex Morningside had ULP @ 98c (94 with a docket)... BP Salisbury was 111c for ULP - now, justify that for me!!!! :thumbdwn:

if you can only get lower RON fuel, dont worry about adding octane booster (repeated use can apparently wear out your injector orings)... just dont put the engine under heavy load or high rpm... ie: dont use full throttle, and dont rev its **** off! simple

as for the ecu retarding the ignition when using poorer fuels, yes it will if it detects knock... but it doesnt then reset back to its original higher performance mapping when you go back onto 98RON, it stays at its new "safe" ignition...

So if you have to put 91 ron fuel in (All caltex and BP servo's in the Nerang area still have no 95 and 98) then it will stay retarted forever? How do we get it back to it's former glory then?

Disconnect the battery to reset ECU.

just dont put the engine under high load/rpm causing it to ping... if you dont flog it, it shouldnt ping... meaning the ECU wont retard

you could possibly unplug your MAP sensor, placing the car in limp mode, temporarily retarding ignition lol but then you cant rev above 3,000rpm...

if it does retard, you can take it to honda and have an idle relearn procedure done, this will start the ECUs self learning process all over again... all good!

Disconnect the battery to reset ECU.

euro has EPROM memory in its ecu, it will not forget its long term idle/ignition/maps by disconnecting the battery... :(
