View Full Version : Question about my newly purchased EG VTi hatch

Hey i just bought an EG VTi hatch about 2-3 weeks ago and i have questions.
Q1. When i reverse (in gear or rolling down a hill) it makes a high pitch squeaky sound, this happens about 50-60% of the time when my car is going backwards. I'm not sure whether it is the brakes or shaft/axle or whatever.
Q2. I was wandering what size sub woofers i should buy for it, 10"/11"/12" etc for best sound quality since the car is very small and can't really fit a large subin anyway hahha.
Q3. I just installed an amp but i cant find anywhere in the boot to screw the amp onto, the back seat is too soft and can't really drill a hole into that. Maybe when i get a sub, ill screw the amp onto the box?

Thanks :D

welcome and, the subbie size doesn't quite matter, considering ur amp should be able to tube the sub, anyways the subbie can be drilled into the rear seats, come by and i'll help u out with that.

q1: sounds like your brake pads are worn out and the sensor is touching the rotors. check all the pads to see how much meat is left on them.
q2: honestly, a 10inch sub is enough for me anyway, with a good headunit and amp its sufficient. I ended up just scrapping my sub and amp as i got sick of the bass and extra weight lol. some good speakers front and rear matched with a good headunit is enough for my music quality needs. so its up to you, what extent you wanna go.
q3: you can mount the amp onto the back of the rear seats in the trunk, dunno about eg but on ek they are steel backing,
otherwise the boot floor or on the sub is other alternatives...basically up to you.

Are you on the brakes? Otherwise, the reverse gear tends to whine because they're straight cut gears.

No i am not on the brakes, even when i'm not in gear it still makes a squeaky sound, ONLY SOMETIMES. It happens more often when I actually reverse in gear, but sometimes i doesnt happen at all. I think it might be the brakes but why would it make sounds when im not even touching the brakes? :S

Another question: sometimes when i drive, esp at high rev in gear 1 or 2, it makes a high frequency clicking sound, but when i hold down the clutch it stops. Sometimes in neutral it makes the sound on idle, but when i hold down the clutch (in neutral still) it stops. I just got a new clutch btw as my old one blew and im gonna get the car checked out at the same mechanic that changd my clutch this thursday, just want to get ur opinons :)

Reverse wine shits me so much.
Pay more attention to the location of the sound and report back :p

As for the sub, the EG is actually a good shape for stereo's. Pay more attention to quality parts than size if you want the best results. You could replace the thin false floor in the rear with a thicker wood to mount the amp.

It wont be brake pads that for sure cos it only happens when ur reversing

Q2: IMO i would def. get 10" sub. Reason being is:
- save space
- lighter
- I've heard a friends 10" sub and sounds like my 15"sub or even better.

I've currently got a 15" sub and i hate it, its big and heavy, takes alot of space and the bass gives me a headache.

EGs have small boots so I'd say 10" ftw!

cheers krizy! i was finking of 11" or 10" :D im pretty sure the eg's compact boot will sound better with a smaller sub anyway ;)
and for the reverse problem guys, im going to the mechanics tmrw, thanks for ur help guys :D

in stereo systems quality is a big issue. if you looking at sub's and enclosures, then remember that a sub designed for a ported box will probably sound crap in a sealed one, and one designed for a sealed box probably will sound crap in a ported one. there are exceptions with subs designed for both, but pay attention to that. all in all, the 15" is gonna sound louder with a bit more bass then the 10" of the same quality. it all depends on how loud your gonna put it, and how much bass you need. the only reason 15" has more bass is that the lower you go, the more air you have to push for it to sound the same.

placement matters alot too. i've found that my passenger foot well is just the right shape and size to make my 7" tube sub my friend gave me sound awesome, but it gets less with the ammount of stuff i put down there, eg. feet, bags etc. (disclaimer: if your serious about making it sound decent, dont use the footwell for your sub, i got lucky)
thats an example, generally diagonals will give your sub a tighter sound as there is less echo's along the same path = less weird interference.

anyway, dont worry about size, worry about quality. if anything, the speaker is the thing with the most effect on the sound your eventually gonna get. the second most is the eq/tone controls, and the source.

10" sub can sound much better then 15" if its set up right.

this is the most important part.

a 10" sub can, and will go louder and lower than a 15, if you set it up right

int eh case of a civic, it will be easier to fit an optimal sized box for a 10" rather than try to squeeze an undersized box for a 15" in

they are all respectable brands, go out and look for sales and good deals.
I had a sony set up before and was very happy with the sound quality.

i think i know the sound when you are reversing. i had the same noise when taking off on cold starts. i reckon it would be your release bearing. if you do change this bearing i recommend changing the cluch and flywheel (new or machined) as it will be more convenient since the geear box is out. hope this helps you dude

you are very correct, i changed the bearing and it fixed that noise and also a clicking noise when the engine is running (even when in neutral), even though i havent mentioned in this thread.

Anyways thank you guys for your help, i really do appreciate it. Everythings all fixed now :) !
