u need time and money
paint stripper sand paper polish and alot of hard work
or just get a pro to do about 100-150 a wheel

^ take it from the man who polished his gearbox

i'd assume paint stripper coupled with an angle grinder would help get rid of the bulk paint before hitting it with some elbow grease and sandpaper?

yup, best to do it with the tyres off. DIY, $ not so much, but fak all time need weeks. best if u dont have a girlfriend lol, quicker.

Anodizing is still only a layer of colour bonded to the surface so anodized parts can still be sanded and polished.

sorry to slightly high-jack..

but re:polishing wheels..
ive got fat (phat) fives.. and was wondering how would i got abouts polishing them up? just 200 grit wet sand paper and elbow grease? would there be any prep work involved?

Cheers

200 grit isnt gonna polish them

its gonna leave big gouges in them

start at 200 then go 500 then 100 then 1200 then 1500 then 2k

the bigger the number the finer the grade

then after 2k alot of polishing stuff

ricer u bump, ur supose to keep them white!!!!
sand blasting them is the easist and then polish them up

if u pay someone to sand blast it itll be cheaper than stripping it

if u want a mirror finish u need to sand until 600 grit, respray, clear coat then sand back with 2000, 3000, 4000 and then medium/fine polishing compound. we're talking mirror finish here though

Highly doubt that, sandblasting 4 wheels will probably cost $100+

1-2 cans of paint stripper = $10-20

Oh and as trism said, its 500 up in increments to 2000 grit, anything more than 2000 grit will be pointless.

anything more than 2000 grit will make the abrasive polishing much easier, trust me

yep you're right sandblasting is bout 100-150 for all 4 rims, but much cleaner. paint stripper doesnt completely strip paint off usually, plus its hard to work with and corrosive youll need to be very careful (im talking about leave on gel-type

also sand blasting leaves a nice coarse metal finish at the end, perfect for spraying on some primer and then base coat and clear coat

just depends on ur budget and technique, all will end with same result :)

Anything more than 2000 grit isn't need for alloy polishing, plus he's not looking to paint the wheels so the finish sandblasting needs is unnecessary for base coats etc.

For mirror polishing just simple 1 or 2 coats of paint stripper, clean wheels, sand from 400 grit up to 2000 grit, and a LOT of metal polishing and buffing.

obviously you're too thick to read his actual post. sand blasting is used when respraying

plus why would he wanna polish rims if he doesnt like white on white??
i think a more accurate question i should ask you is, are your parents related

need to really think about it before going ahead and polishing it, as once you start no turning back.
i started sanding down some fat fives and damnn so much time and effort is required..im still on rim 1 LOL
