what are the advantages and disadvantages of a respray and vinyls. what are the price difference?

im looking to have my roof black. or even respray the whole car. i need opinions.. is it worth respraying?

What car are you driving? What's your budget? And what's your reason?

I've seen pretty good work with Vinyl.

Especially one where they covered an entire 4wd in Matt black Vinyl

are you talking about the Lambo with a matt black vinyl? thats the whole reason y i created this thread.. hehehe thought it might be a cheaper option than a respray.

I think it gives you the flexibility of back tracking if ever you didn't like the new colour

re: Lambo - No, the Vinyl work I've wasn't in AU

depends on your expect life of your car/project. a respray is always going to give a longer lasting finish but a vinyl can be replaced/removed with relative ease once a change of mind has a occurred. If you going to have just a single colour and not design paint for sure

The vinyl will have finish of a year then expect some problems, fading, peeling or scratched finish. you can have any design you can imagine with vinyl at similiar price a similiar spray finish will need a airbrushing more $$$$

so still 50/50 which way you go

Interesting.

So there's Vinyl decals but your talking about covering the roof or even the whole car in Vinyl right? So one solid colour, and if you don't like it,just peel it off.

Just clearing up the confusion,am I on the right track here? :)

But when you scratch the vinyl, would you see the base paint , which would make it look ugly or really weird?

If you can be bothered applying the vinyl urself, go vinyl. The material is quite cheap, its just the labour that makes up about 80% of the cost. Many benifits of vinyl..... if it breaks/tears/ect cheap to buy some more (make sure its vinyl from same company) and redo that panel. Got bored of the colour? $500 for a new one and best of all... No sanding required :>
If however you want a good quility, nice car look about it youd be better off getting it resprayed.

I will most likey be going down the vinyl path when i redo my little proposed honda project, not too fussy about the appearance and it deals with the prblem of rust at rwc/rego inspections quite well :)

RESPRAY - Pros (Look good, Diff colour than factory paint)
Cons (expensive, time without car, depends on the w/shop, quality)

VINYL - PROS (easy and cheaper option, can revert back to stock)
CONS (need to find good vinylist, time without car depending on expertise, when removing it's a piece of sh1t to remove the glue)

Therefore if money is no object than respray would be the first option.

what happens when you scratch a car thats had a respray over another colour?

vinyl will look crap when scratched but it is more tolerable than paint, if scratched deep enough it'll go through vinyl + base paint.

respray if you scratch it you'll go down to baremetal and you'll get rust.

so either way if you vinyl or respray scratching it will fk your car up either way.

So don't scratch your car!
