Hi All,

I've got a whirring noise coming from the rear right of my car. Sounds like a wheel bearing, as i go faster, the whirring gets faster too.

I know you can just change the wheel bearing on the front brakes, but can you also do that on the back? Or do i have to buy a complete hub assembly?

Thanks.

Chris

rear bearing simply falls out once you undo the hub nut (32mm) and undo the nut from behind. Its held in a large cog type casing. You buy it as a unit and not too hard to replace.

jack the car up on one corner , handbrake down and physically move teh wheel in question around by hand. Rotate it at speed and see if you and replicate the noise.See if the wheel moves around at all

Thanks Bennjamin!

I'm dropping it off at the mechanics tomorrow to have it all checked out, but i'll check it out whilst it's up on the hoist.

So, it's not too expensive to replace the bearing?

Just been told by the mechanic that i can't just replace the rear wheel bearing, you can on the front, but not on the rears. I have to buy a whole hub assembly and replace the old one.

lol what? im pretty sure you can. because once the spindle nut is out, rotor retaining screws out too, you can take out the bearing (usually inner race will be stuck on hub).

ill take a pic tomorrow.

As i said above - the bearing is a unit , cog on one side that sits into the arm then the hub then a 32mm nut basically. Its quite easily changed. You buy it as a "unit" and swap it over.

the mechanic called advanced drive shafts or some company like that.

and when he tried to order a rear wheel bearing, they said they don't just sell the bearing. so i had to get that whole assembly that you're holding in your last photo. hehe

PS. YOUR SO HOT RIGHT NOW! HAHAHA

CNC bearings can get you bearing by itself.

If you get the whole hub assembly, it's just take less time and labour, as you don't need to press out the wheel bearing from the original hub, and also press in the new bearing.

But you can DIY it. only down side, whole hub assembly cost more than a $60 wheel bearing.

Is there a way to take out the bearing from the hub assemble? Anyone tried doing this? because i had the whole pair of rear hubs replaced.

maybe u can press it out, but it'll probably cost u more for labour than to replace the hub assembly

i was even contemplately changing both sides...but the mech said just wait for it to make noises, then change it. =)
