A vtec controller will only change the point at which the engine switches from the low to high cam, as where an ecu such as hondata for example, can change that, fuel and ignition, injector function, rev limit ect to name a few.

Vtec controllers are a waste of time and money IMO, more a gimmick opposed to a fully adjustable ecu, even for a fairly stock engine, you can get more from a stock motor with a decent tune, and then its in place for any future mods.

VTEC CONTROLLER
Anyhow, Vtec Controller is just a piggy back overwriting your stock ECU. You can tweak the vtec cam changing over point at some certain RPM as well as the AF ratio. Having said that, you need to ensure that the thickness(lean/rich) of your fuel is pumped appropriately base on your change over point. People usually uses Vtec Controller as a basic tune when they are done with I/H/E.

ECU
There are varieties of ECUs (Hondata, Emanage and etc) on the market that has different capability. The common and better one I would say would be hondata. They are commonly used when you have your cams, piston and anything concerning the engine is changed. Hence, you need a better ECU to fully utilise your mod on your engine as they are no longer the stock settings anymore.

It depends on what you really want to do on your car. I would advice you to think about it before purchasing either one of them. If you intend to go all out on your car then I reckon that an ECU will best suit you. However, you are simply going for I/H/E and doesn't want to touch the engine at all. Then a vtec controller (VAFC) would be good enough for you (Cheaper).

If you want to know more about ECU. ECU Man would be the best person to ask for more advice. ;P

Cheers.
