I went down to the wreckers to pick up a B20 Block today but there was two different types of blocks?. Which block do i need to get which will give me the higher compression. How do i tell if its the 9:1 compression motor?
There was two B20B8's, one 97, and a 99 and one B20B4.
Which one should i pick up?.

You want a 99-01 B20b8 with PHK pistons, if it's just the short block you will see "PHK" stamped into the top of the pistons

ohhk cool. on the other b20 motors is there another stamp?. All three motors are assembled with the head, is there a way to tell without exposing the block?.

The B20B8 should have the PHK pistons

doesnt the JDM B20Z have even higher compression ? but probably V hard to find.

i think the Intake Manifold will have the series cast into it - so look to see if it saysPHK on the IM... possibly..

The "JDM" and "USDM" B20Z is the same as our AUDM B20B8 both have the PHK pistons which gives you a slightly higher compression ratio

zeforce can you confirm what VT3C said, as the wrecker is saying, if he pulls it apart i have to buy it. =( also will i gain same compression as you if i installed worked B16A2 head?.

B20B8 + B16a PR3 head = 9.96:1 compression
B20B8 + B18c P72 head = 10.14:1 compression

This is with OEM gasket and untouched deck or head

Get the FSM - it can be downloaded from a number of sites worldwide.

You remove the head by undoing the head bolts in the correct sequence, as outlined in the manual. Use a torque wrench calibrated to the correct force (in steps). Then pop the head off by tapping it with a rubber hammer to loosen the gasket. You may also have to use a large screwdriver but be careful not to damage the head surface.

I assume you've removed all the other bits, like timing belt, etc. As a rule, you should set the head/belt to Top Dead Centre (TDC) before removing the head. It's all in the manual - very thorough. Be sure to use a clean workspace with plenty of room to move about.
