hi was just curious and interesed in DIYing for customer cold air intakes, firstly whats involved and what is needed for the process? How to design it so you get maximum efficiency?

What makes a custom cai differ from an injen one for example?

what sort of gains are expected from a cai?

I'm gonna pull an Aaron and say, "how long is a piece of string?"

There are so many intakes you can define as 'cold air intakes'. I had the stock box with a K&N panel filter, with a pipe running down to the bumper. Technically it was a cold air intake but it was incomparable to the Injens and AEMs etc.

Do you mean custom as in, modifying the stock one to be a CAI? Or creating a new one entirely?

Modifying the stock is easily and relatively cheap, just takes some time and patience.

New one entirely will require you to go to a shop, probably a competent exhaust shop, and get them to mandrel bend you some piping. It can get expensive though as they need to weld in holes for all the stock sensors etc.

The gains are impossible to say. The gain you'll make if everything else is stock is completely different to the gain you'll make if you also do some of the exhaust. Best way to find out is the make the decision what you want your intake to be and get it, dyno it and post back here!

well i bought the injen cai from jdmyard and after reading a few posts on the forum about diy your own intake i was just a little curious on how to, i guess your right as you said jus bend a few pipes and will take a lot of patience which i dont really have haha

anyway where can you do dyno tests in sydney and how much?

The only dyno I know of which is considered to be consistent is at Toda, they're a trader so check the marketplace. I really have no experience with dynos, I'm not saying Toda is the best or the only one, it's just the only one I know of.

Get a few more things done before you dyno though, it should be a simple 5-6hp gain at the wheels with your injen, no fun in it. Do some other stuff in combination then do a dyno, it will be more fun to see how your combination of parts performs compared to 1 part :D

TODA
3 runs and they printout the best run results

if you go on a dyno day - $50,
if you go individually - $80 approx.

I messaged Adrian a few days about doing a dyno run and he said $50, I made no mention of a dyno day or there being anyone but me. Maybe they've reduced price? If they have, everyone do it now! :D

go for it then, let us know;

wouldn't be surprised if you pull high 120's

My goal for all this was getting as close to 135kW as I could, but I'm not sure how realistic that is. When the car get's dynoed it will have; intake, 64mm throttle body, RBC, J's Racing header, 400cell cat, 2.5" exhaust. I dunno, I have very little experience with dynos :o

Might have to save that 135kW milestone for when my next few things go on :D

if enkay who had gruppem intake and maximworks headers + hi flow cat could pull 129kw atw your car would be around high 120's too. But depends on your intake and where your pod feeds, cause gruppem has a scoop near the middle (radiator) where the blower hits.

Was the intake, header and high flow cat all he had done? What dyno was it done at?

If that's all he had done then I think I could surpass that by a bit, hopefully :o

yeh and i think he also has the pulley kit (not UR ones)
