After months of speculation, Honda team sources have finally confirmed that the outfit will remain in Formula One this year following a management buyout.

The Japanese manufacturer announced its withdrawal from the sport in December, with the squad having since been centre of attention regarding new ownership.

Sources close to the team have confirmed to The Times that the final plans of an intense buyout are now going through, with team principal Ross Brawn leading the organisation. The 'new' Honda will be funded by a combination of sponsors and F1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone, as well as the manufacturer itself for 2009.

The car will be powered with a Mercedes-Benz engine, following a customer deal with McLaren, and England's Jenson Button at the wheel. A new name for the team is yet to be annouced, as well as news on Button's team-mate. Heated speculation surrounds Bruno Senna, nephew of three-times World Champion Ayrton, who is the most likely candidate for the drive followed by compatriot Rubens Barrichello.

A shakedown of the new car is due to take place next week at Silverstone.

One thing for sure it aint gonna be called the Honda F1 team, not with an MB Mclaren engine in it aint. I'd bet on Virgin Atlantic F1 Team.
Bernie wouldn't have put his money in unless Branson's Virgin brand was a backer.
This is how I see it panning out .
Branson will hold the advert rights for the next 3 years and then he and Bernie will sell the operation to the US F1 team when they enter in 2010. Branson will still have the advert rights for 2 more years giving the Virgin Atlantic brand higher exposure to the US market under the Virgin Atlantic
USF1 team banner.
Danica Patrick comes onboard the team as driver in 2010 replacing either Jenson or Bruno (probably Jenson) pushing the F1 media circus into hyperdrive and the Virgin branding thru the roof.
Honda come back in 2011 as engine supplier to the Virgin Atlantic USF1 team giving their branding in the US another hike.

Remember F1 is all about business and prestige , it's not about racing cars anymore , all they are is extremely expensive enormously quick mobile
billboards.
I mean the first complaint from the competitors when the the size of the rear wing was reduced for 2009 was not about the grip lost but how much advert space was to be lost.

I'm far from having a cry, more of a laugh at you. Look at the end of the day Ozhonda is a forum for people with a car passion. Up to the individual as to whether the car they discuss is a Honda or not. It's a bit dumb to post a non-Honda on a Honda forum but that doesn't mean they should get ripped into about it.

that's not exactly buttons fault but.. its like saying i dont think hamilton is any good.. it is also a major factor upon the car... in 2006 honda was one of the top teams, then when they ditched BAR it was downhill there on out.. hamilton for example wouldnt be good either if he was in a super aguri... this year "honda drivers" will be awesome. Team Honda is now called Brawn Racing and will be a powerhorse my bet, its got the mclaren's engines and the aerodynamics guru of ferrari when they were indestrucible.. shall be a good season for them hopefully..

Mere weeks after rising from Honda's ashes as 'Brawn GP', the Brackley-based team could be set for yet another name change.

Following the eleventh-hour sponsorship deal with the Virgin brand, Sir Richard Branson in Melbourne admitted his company might take over the name of the Mercedes-powered team.

The British billionaire told selected journalists at Albert Park that Saturday's announcement was just the first part of the new Brawn collaboration.

"I think, even in the next three to four weeks, we would all like to see this develop into a more complete relationship. We will have to see," Branson said.

The first step - perhaps after next weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix - will be obtaining permission for a substantially new livery, after a few Virgin logos were hurriedly added to the white and yellow BGP 001 for Saturday's running.

Slightly beyond that, applications for a name change - requiring the agreement of all the teams - are likely, and it is rumoured that some equity may also change hands.

Asked about the possibility of the 'Brawn' team becoming 'Virgin', Branson said: "It is certainly possible.

"I don't think the team want to have the name not promoting anything, everybody knows it has a great engineer (Ross Brawn) so there is not the need for it to be named after an engineer."

"That (the name) may well change, but we have to see what happens," said Branson, who may attend a few more races this season.
