hi guys. ive decided to mod my new 2009 honda accord euro CU2 by adding interior blue neon.
the lighting will also be attatched to a small device that detects sound and controls the pulses of light to the beat.
i havent found a device standalone for this yet. but i mite buy stuff like this:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1989
and cut off and solder onto my setup. which shudnt be too hard really. i figured that it acts just like a switch and turns on and off according to the level of sound.

ive spend a week researching different options and methods to do this but i seriously need some help.

(please move my post if it belongs in the noob section, thanks)

basically ive decided there can be 2 methods to achieve what i want to do:

1) use Led strips which can be easily and VERY cheaply be found on the internet. about 1m for less than $5 incl postage

2) use EL wire. for those who do not know what EL wire is. i highly reccomend googling/youtubing it.
in short it is a form of wire which has a copper core coated with a phosphorus layer which glows and a vinyl layer surrounding it which insulates (i think) and colours it. when alternating current is applied it glows brightly but nothing like leds

the advantage of el wire is that it is a 360degree glow around the wire and is VERY VERY cool. pretty much no heat at all.
you can also cut it to different lengths. and several meters can be powered by AA batteries for several hours.

in terms of price, i am looking at around $10 per meter. give or take (esp considering US price conversions)
here is a good example of car charger powered, 1.5m of el wire for less than ten bux
http://cgi.ebay.com/12V-1-5M-Flexible-Car-Blue-Neon-Light-Wire-Rope-Cable_W0QQitemZ250378736454QQihZ015QQcategoryZ7223 7QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

next comes power source.
there are 3 possible ways.

1) the first option, which really applies to EL wire, is Batteries. a battery power source etc for el wire is easily sourceable, but the trouble with that is i have to constantly get batteries and its a messy setup.
i think leds wud use too much power to run off batteries.
2) the second option is to use the car ciggerate lighter/12v power source.
now in my car i have the ciggarette lighter and also a designated 12v power source in my middle armrest box thingy.

im trying not to go this path (although it will probably be the easiest, due to the readily available materials) as i will have cables running accross the middle of my car around my transmission and hand brake. so it could be both annoying and dangerous. also i have a gps and ipod charger and AUX cable already messying up the place so i wud like to keep cables from there to a minimum

3) the third and best (but hardest) option, which i need help with (and the whole point of this post) is sourcing the power from the car itself.

after a bit of research (i am a complete car noob). you can source the power from the car battery, via cables underneath the steering wheel area or above the pedal area. or similarly near the front passenger side.
one person i saw did it via that area and used the power source from the ciggarette lighter cable.
other simpler methods simply plugged a rectangular plug (edit, i found out these plugs are called "easy connectors", so original lol) into the car's power box/board or whatever you call it.

i think with the majority of the LED strips and EL wires, i they can come with these plugs and i am trying to find how i can plug them into the car's power box. or somehow safely tap into the car's power supply.

my biggest problem is how to open up the under area to access cables. or locate where this power box is in the first place!? :S

can anyone help me?
thanks

done added.

any other help and input still welcome tho

ive finished working out that im gunna put leds under the foot area. (which i hope ndeuro you can help with)

but im gunna line the edges of my dash and door and glove box etc area with EL wire. i found an incredibly cheap seller and i can get the audio triggered inverter for $10.

my only problem is, how the hell do i line it against the edges without it falling off? or leaving adhesive stains. sticky tape? :S

The 3 ways you described are NOT the way to do it. You should remove the trim to access the wiring of the cigarette lighter (easier to access than the 12V in the armrest). Tap your wires to the wiring of the ciggy lights using a relay and then switching that relay on and off using the wiring which runs the ashtray compartment light bulb.

im having trouble figuring out how to remove the trim. could u gimme some pointers? ill post some pics. nathan said to talk to u lol cause ur in sydney.
and what do u mean by switching the relay on and off?

i have no idea how to take the trim apart. the ashtray area has screws, but looking at how it sits, it looks like removing screws alone wont be enough

i also managed to locate the fusebox and ecu i think. it has alot of plugs and stuff going into it and lots of open slots. wud i be able to plug anything into them?
some of the stuff i found online had cables with ends that your supposed to plug directly into something. its rectangular like the shape of those slots

*edit*
i found this website
http://www.all-neon-car-lights.com/how-to-install-interior-car-lights.html#%3CH4%3EHow%20to%20Install%20Interior% 20Car%20Lights%20using%2012v%20power%20from%20unde r%20dash%20-%20Step%201%3C/H4%3E
it basically says u can also draw power from the power cables that go into the fuse box. for example the LIGHTER. which would mean my lighter power cable wud be going thru there and i wouldnt have to rip apart the trim yeh?

only problem is, i saw the actual fuse box, and theres a huge mess of wires and i cant tell whats wat.

heres some blurry pics i took, hard to take while dark, shaky and upside down lol

i also had a look under my bonnet (first time since buying my car lolz). there seems to be no entry i can use to poke wires thru the firewall, unless i drill holes..while i aint gunna do. so i guess using the interior power is the only way.

also the negative terminal of the battery, its connected via a short cable to the metal chassis of the car body. isnt that grounding it? im picturing a circuit in my head and all i see is the positive to watever electrical item to the negative..which is connected to the earth. doesnt make sense..

just so your aware if you screw something with your wiring theres no warranty

yes i know

i other news, i noticed i have this dim light underneath my foot area already.
it also exists on the top roof light.

according to the manual. this is a light that very dim but enuff to allow u to locate stuff inside ur car at night. the brightness is the same as the dashboard light.

would i be able to source power from there? even tho its so dim, wud it be enuff power?

How thick is the wiring on the dim light? The wire has to be thick enough, maybe 1.5 to 2mm and you can use that. If it is the thin type of wiring, then I wouldn't really risk it, just in case that wire's power spec is just enough for the dim lights and ends up being overloaded with the superbright LEDs.

From the pics, there should be 2 more screws beneath the ashtray, which you get to by removing the gearstick trim first, as per my PM. There are wires under the trim because you have seat warmers, so be careful not to pull it out too hard. You can disconnect the seat warmer wiring after that because it is connected using a plug. Be warned that pulling the gearstick trim wrongly can result in a cracked trim or broken clip.

I don't like messing with wiring from the fusebox, especially if you are not experienced in car electricals. Plus, if you tap a wire that is before the fusebox, then you don't have any fuse protection for the lights. Worse yet, wiring before the fusebox is always on, so you will drain the battery if you don't use a relay.

ok the trim thing is confusing me a bit, any chance u can draw an arrow or circle on my uploaded pic to show me where u mean?

also with the dim light, its showing thru the cover/trim thing underneath the steering wheel. so i have to remove that cover first. i dont noe where the clips are that are holding it. i think most cars have this cover tho. once i get past that i shud be able to see the wiring,
