View Full Version : Problems after installing J's Racing intake

I got a J's Racing intake for my EK4 yesterday and I spent the day installing it. I have never done an intake before so it was a bit of a challenge but one that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I removed all the factory airbox parts and installed the J's intake, plugged the air sensor into the J's intake and installed the new hose from the intake to the head cover.

Now, I didn't realise at the time that I needed to run a piece of hose for the water cooled manifold. I took the car for a drive and noticed coolant coming out everywhere.

Today I used an old piece of hose and installed it in the correct location for the water cooled manifold and clamped it all etc.

I just took the car for a drive and gave it a bit of stick and hit VTEC a few times to see how the intake performs. When I glanced over at the temperature guage I was surprised to see it about 3-4 mm from red. Now, my car has never gone over half temp even on a 40 degree day so this really concerned me (I didn't have a/c on only fan). I have heard putting the heater on full at this time usually brings the needle down so I did that and the needle instantly went above red. I immediately turned the heater and everything else off and the needle pretty much immediately went back down to half. Weird! I pulled into my driveway to inspect the work I had just done with the engine running. I checked for any leaks from the manifold etc and everything was fine. I looked at the temp again and it had risen to over 3/4 again. The strange thing is that the radiator cap was barely warm to touch. I would have thought it would be scorching. The head cover was hot but it always is after a run. I'm really confused and I have no idea what the problem is. There is still heaps of coolant in the radiator and nothing jumps out at me as being disconnected or broken etc.

Please help, this is my daily drive so I need to sort it out asap.

I have just checked and no fan is running when car is idling. Only one fan runs when a/c is on and radiator fan isn't running at all. I have checked both fan relays in fuse box and both seem ok. Where is the fan switch located?

did you top up your coolant to replace what was lost on the first drive ?

Yes I did. Coolant is full.

I have just unplugged the radiator fan and run 12v power through it and it worked perfectly. I'm guessing there is an electrical problem with the fan. Is there a switch for the cooling fan and how can I check if it's faulty? All fuses etc are fine.

Check the thermostat opens and closes, i.e. check to see if both radiator hoses are hot, if not, your thermostat is Farkeddddd. it could just be by chance that it screwed up whilst you were doing the intake!

Just went for a drive and checked and both are hot. Thermostat seems ok. The temp got to half when I ran it around the block and I checked to see if the fan was running and it wasn't. When exactly does the radiator fan start running? Am I correct in assuming on the B16A2 the fan switch is located in the thermostat housing? My thermostat housing has absolutely no electrical connections attached to it however there is a hole which looks like something may plug into the back of it. I'm going mad trying to suss this out lol.

Thanks mate I didn't think of that. I'm going to flush the whole system tomorrow and start again.
