dc2r 5 gear problem, when i drive and change to 5th gear some times it crunches, the clutch is pushed all the way down aswell, has any1 else had this type of problem??

Yes I do have this problem.

It happens at high speed on the highway. no matter whether I rev match or anything.

It just happens randomly.

I always thought it was the syncro...

for me, it only happens when i redline 2nd gear onto the freeway and try to put it direct into 5th.

i have to go through all successive gears, then into 5th and its fine.

why would u skip gears?

silly.

silly.

why wouldnt you?

If u've hit the speed limit, and u are ready to cruise on 5th, naturally one would go straight into 5th. but because that creates crunching, then u have to go through the lot.

not sure why that happens, seeing that gears boxes are mechanical constructs and you are merely selecting a different cog.

edit: on my ek1 and ej8 (d-series), this issue did not occur. maybe its just confined to the B-series boxes.

This don't happen with my EG4.

Just for the record :/

Seems to be isolated to B-series gearboxes.

Doesn't happen to mine at all, might be worth looking into a new gearbox oil.

mines the same...
if im close to redline on 2nd (~7000rpm) and try to put into 5th it crunches
thought it was my box

how can u rev match while shifting up

how can u rev match while shifting up

Exactly the same way as shifting down, you blip the throttle to push the revs up to the require level and put it in a much higher gear to lessen any shudder you might get, or to help build the revs up so you don't struggle so much.

anyway doesnt going from 2nd to 5th etc ruin syncros after repetitively doing it.. as i heard :p

Exactly.

Instead of trying to shit quickly (risking crunching) I shift slowly and blip the throttle to get the revs up to the required level.

Not all the time, but sometimes to try and avoid this crunch.

ive never had a problem

the only crunching i get is from 1st to 2nd at high revs ..

but i always ease it in 5th anyway..

changing your gearbox oil might help

most likely synchros on its way out...

hey any1 with this problem i worked it out, just double clutch 5th and it goes in with ease no crunching

not for me.

i still dont understand the concept?
you will get more of a jerk if u revving past the point that the rpm will be after shifting up and releasing the clutch...

or is this a technique for ppl with take 5 seconds to shift up?
lolz.

your suppose to rev match by allowing the rpms to drop when you up gear.... your only suppose to rev it up when yu downgear to rev match...

so when yu accelerate and you wanna go into 5th.... put the clutch in.. allow the revs to fall quite a bit and then try going in.. reving it will most probably make it worsse

when i drive mine it crunches 3rd at like 5k revs plus... even normal shifting =/

Try clutching in until the tacho drops to about 2500rpm or lower, then try putting it into 5th. The problem is one half of the gearbox is spinning too fast.

Could 5th gear problems relate to reverse gear? Do they have individual syncro's?

AFAIK reverse doesn't have a synchro. It uses a dog gear to engage (which is why it's so easy to crunch reverse).

5th is a low gear ratio, and it's synchro is probably going. At a guess that's what's wrong.

i'm not a mechanic, but i know the syncros are made to adjust about 2000rpm to compensate for each gear change up or down. going from 7000rpm to 2000rpm, being 5000rpm change for the syncros does not sound like they can handle to rapid change and hence the gearbox has the failsafe mechanism to have u 'crunch' it in for it to go (like it does going back into first when over 20kms/hr). this must be telling us something when the gearbox really is fine. as i said, not a mechanic, but logic would suggest this... love to have a TQ mechanic verify this

it happened to mine a long time ago, when changing from 4th to 5th in higher revs. i think it was the bearings or synch, cant remember
