hey ozjazz owners,

Ok so after lending my car to my old man a few times a week, gear changing is very bad and it even grinds 5th gear. So i'm looking at changing my clutch. With regards to cost, is it worth replacing stock or should i go for a exedy heavy duty clutch. does anyone know where i can get it done and the price i'll be looking at for parts and installation. While iam at it, should i get a lightweight flywheel aswell. i live in brisbane btw.

thanks

if your thinkin of takin it to the track a couple of times during the cars life, then go for the HD kit. i was in the same dilemma as you dude, but i decided to go for a OEM replacement Exedy. cheapest place i know to get Exedy is Toda Australia, he a dealer on here. the Exedy HD kit comes with a new flywheel, OEM replacement dosnt. your in brisbane right? pm me, i know someone who cand do cheap and legit

crunching gears wont really be the clutch that needs replacement , its the gearbox fluid or clutch fluid that needs replacement , or perhaps something more sinister inside the gearbox is playing up. Start with the cheap things first. Change the hydraulic fluid for the clutch - then change the gearbox fluid and see if that helps

yea i did this yesterday - changed the mtf with some royal purple - but same sH!T. LOL. i'll try replacing the hydraulic fluid tomorro after uni. If that doesn't work then i'll go n replace the clutch. btw how do i drain the clutch hydraulic fluid? is it just like changing oil or do i need to bleed? thanks for your input

I have replaced/bled clutch fluid before. It's just like doing the same thing with your brakes and it used the same fluid. You just need to find the slave cylinder and see if it has a bleed nipple. While you're at it, check for dirt/peeled paint around the slave cylinder or the master cylinder that indicates a leak. get the leak fixed before you replace the fluid.

I had a leaking clutch slave cylinder on a car once and it caused exactly the problem you describe. What happens is, because of air bubbles getting in the line, the clutch plate travel is reduced and it will drag, causing the crunching gears.

Please remember, clutch/brake fluid does horrible things to your paint. So don't spill any! If you do, wash it off with water. Don't wipe it off or you make it worse.

yea, bleed the clutch hydraulic system today. surprisingly some air bubbles came out. I replaced the fluid with some left over brake fluid. the clutch engages smoothly and doesn't 'near stall' on the friction point. Well thats good. but it still grinds 2nd only when i flat shift it at 6k. lol thanks for ur input guy/girls - i think i'll stick with this clutch for now until something else plays up.

Keep an eye on it. If it plays up again there is a leak somewhere. In fact I'd go so far as to say you do have a leak somewhere, because if air is getting in, fluid is getting out.

Brake/clutch fluid does horrible things to paintwork and if it fails altogether, you'll have no clutch, so I would follow this up. Usually the leakage is from the seal on the slave cylinder or the master cylinder. That means a new or reconditioned component.

If you are lucky, it's just a weeping union on one of the pipes and you might be able to just tighten it up.

i think its not a leak cause from the time i had the car, (14 months) the fluid level is still up to notch. weird but i'll be safe than sorry i'll give it another check tomorrow
