Hey guys.. ive had this problem for a while now.. my dc5r seems to hesitate.. i.e. take longer to get to Vtec than normal... It goes to about 6800 or 7000rpm and takes longer to get to 8000rpm.
It seems to slow down somewhat?? I only really feel it in gears other than 1st (mainly 2nd) probably because it accelerates too fast to notice in 1st
Does anyone know whats up?
I'll take it to get looked at asap.

Alex

Have you changed the fuel filter and checked the plugs? What engine oil are you using (brand, model and viscosity)? What mods do you have? Anything odd recently like poor fuel consumption?

Is the car fully warmup? or you are running on cold engine....? engine oil and gear oil been change lately? or how long you haven't change them yet? any aftermarket parts fitted in the car? All of these may explain why....

Fuel filter is new, haven't checked the plugs (which ones are you referring to?) Engine oil (0-40 MOBIL 1 full syn gold) but i dont think its engine oil because ive changed it a few times and car still has problem (ever since i bought it) 02 DC5R. Fuel Consumption maybe be an issue i'll check how much i get from a tank.. But my last fill up i only did 140kms on half a tank - -'

Car is fully warmed otherwise vtec doesnt even engage =P . Engine oil is fine.. Gear oil needs to be changed. But i dont think its any of these issues.. i get the problem even straight after a service. Car was stock before and had same problem.

Im thinking it could be fuel pump issue or a stuffed up ecu??

Why did you buy it then? What are you comparing this too - other stock DC5R?

The I In I-Vtech may be your problem, Theres a thread on here somewhere that i cant find that explains I-Vtech & how the computer controls engine output based on certain factors & i think one of them is driving style, Kinda like what happens to the e55 AMG supercharged V8 Mercs, if you dont drive them hard they go soft after a while and when you go to accelrate the engine output will not be at its full potential, but once you squirt them around a bit the engines computer allows the engine the "open up" and you start experiancing maximum performance again. I think something like this happens on all I-vtech cars,

But then again I could be wrong!

My advise to you would be to take it to a honda specialist who has a dyno and see what is actually happening..

Take it Honda, and get them to run a diagnositic on your ECU. If there are any errors, they will be able to tell if a sensor or something is broken.

Got the car checked out yesterday at toda. Change of engine and transmission oil. Car seems to need new spark plugs. With the vtec hessitation they said it could be due to a carbon filled cat, or the pervious owner not thrashing it enough and thus carbon build up and hence loss of power at top end. Thus I was told to thrash it. I drove it home with no problem with vtec enganging at usual 6000rpm. That night I also changed back to my stock airbox (with hondata airbox mod). Now for some reason vtec doesnt engage =S does anyone know what may be the cause? i've checked my fuses they seem fine. And i reconnected all the wires which i had to take off to put my airbox back in. =(

Does it just hit a "rev limiter" at 6000 rpm... or does it just not engage vtec (ie start to die after 6000rpm?) Was car warm up? When you replaced the intake, did you restart the ECU? (disconnect the battery, let it sit for 10 min reconnect battery etc etc)

If it keeps reving after 6000rpm, maybe you just can't hear vtec, so thats why you think its not engaging...

The car works as per normal, cuts into vtec ect ect, but while in vtec it feels as though the power cuts out and then comes back

did you change plugs or just find out you need new ones? my dc5r back in NZ did the same thing, it was plugs and leads.

also, with the revving the car out. that is a very true statement. i've owned a few hondas with true vtec, h22a prelude, k20a dc5r, and now over here a non true vtec civic sport :( love the car but power, hmmm, pity no jdm type r's available through dealers

but yeah if you rev the car out, it does no harm to it from i've seen. if anything, the car performs better than most others. my prelude had done over 200k, which in NZ is very high k's on a car, and it performed perfectly, no burning oil, no leaks, yet other ones that had lady owners from new had many problems in top end from not having the variable valve stuff occuring when vtec kicks in as much as mine had with a male owner. i think it's actually bad for the engine from what i was told seeing they are designed for vtec. it's like havign a turbo and never engaging it, it will break.

have to say, surprised someone had a dc5r and didn't push it to the limit regularly....

hope your problem get's sorted mate, i know the feeling when you put the foot down and the power seems somewhat broken.
