Yes,it will affect performance. You can change the Valve cover gasket if you want,it's not necesarilly a must.
How long since it's been changed?
Any oil leaking around the gasket?

If it's been a long you may wish too or if oil is visible.

You will also need gasket sealant when putting the gasket back on,just use it in the corners.

Here's a DIY:

Also there are spark plug grommets in the spark plug holes, you will see them on the inside of the valve cover when you take it off. They can rip/tear and oil will get into the spark plug chamber. They should be replaced if torn.

What engine do U have?

Bro just chuck some thicker oil in & it should clear up the noise!

It's a band aid fix...

Do we have a b-series DIY?

Yes it does, Most people think you need to use thiner oil so as it can go through all the little gallies and oil ways throught the engine easier but the fact is once that thinner oil heats u it becomes really thin so its not really doing much to protect metal on metal bits and pieces, use a thicker oil, lets say 10W60 or even 15W30 in your motor for a bit as when this thicker oil reaches its operating temperature it wont be as thin as your current oil and will provide a thinker layer of protection between you tappets, hence reducing the amount on tapping noise which comes of them. ide prob recomend using a thicker oil anyway as the motor could be quit worn after so many km's but if u dnt belive me ask any reputable mechanic or someone similar and theyll prob tell you the same thing.

As beeza said, just changing to thicker oil is a band-aid solution.
Best to get the tappets adjusted correctly before the problem gets worse.

Dude to be honest with you, oil is oil, i mean their are better brands & what not but yeah castrol is fine for the job,
seriosuly adjusting your own tappets is a pain in the ass, you need to be good with a feeler guage, have like 8 hands to hold everything in akward positions whilst you loosen & tighten bolts & screws and 9/10 times your prob gonna do it wrong as all the engines clearances would have changed due to it being an old motor, so that means youll need to do all the adjusting by using your "feel" of the part which is always hit & miss!

I'm not sure about b-series...I have only done my d and it was a piece of piss!

Go get them adjusted. Just make sure, you leave the car in the workshop overnight before they are adjusted. The engine needs to be ice cold. If you do a tappet adjustment whilst the engine is hot, or luke warm you will not be able to adjust the tappets correctly.

yes thicker oil definitely hide the noise, but does not eliminate the problem...

my celica make the same noise and it is more audible using 5w-30 oil... when i use 10w-40 the noise is reduced by about 40%....

that car had been making that noise for the past 2 years....

if you use a 15w grade oil the noise will prob dissapear, eventually one day if the tappets get really loose youll then need to adjust them but untill then it up to you!
