View Full Version : OBD1, OBD2, which hondata to order?
Hi guys,
My car is OBD1 (EG civic) currently running OBD2 ECU (power FC) as engine is B18CR.
I want to purchase a hondata s300 with a new ECU, however I'm not sure which one to order. Do I order an OBD1 ECU, or an OBD2 ECU?
I was looking at this from the States:
Limited Time Offer - Hondata S300 Bundle
For a limited time Hondata has bundled an OBD1 ECU with built in OBD2 adapter harness with an S300. With no external cables adapter cables to fit or break; no socketing or soldering, the Hondata OBD2/S300 bundle is a great off the shelf solution.
OBD1 ECU with integrated OBD2A or OBD2B connector
* Pre-installed Hondata S300
* Internally upgraded with boost control circuitry
* New show quality replacement lid
This turnkey solution is based on a remanufactured Honda OBD1 ECU that is plug and play. All socketing, testing and installation is done by Hondata.
Bundled OBD1 ECU w/built-in OBD2 adapter harnes []
All Vehicles OBD1 US 895.00
Bundled OBD1 ECU w/built-in OBD2 adapter harness - Forced Induction [] $ 945.00
Please advise, thanks guys!

how are you running the powerfc on the current engine? is it straight from the harness to ecu or is there a conversion harness in between?

power fc for a dc2r is obd2a... So You must be running a conversion harness unless you have the full dc2r wiring harness running the whole car..
You have obd2a im sure

Get a OBD1 Hondata S300. That way you can recoup some money back on covnersion harness.
OK Yonas told me my car is OBD1 and my ECU is OBD2. I like your suggestion fatboyz39 to get an OBD1 Hondata s300 which will plug straight in, and sell the powerFC and the conversion harness.
Looks like an OBD1 hondata will cost me around $1300 imported, and tuning will cost around 550. That's under 1900 all up. Alternatively, I could get a Motec m400 (or m4?) brand new fitted and tuned for 3200 all up. Hmmm...not sure

Thought of Vipec plug and play? Thats what we are using with some pleasing results.
Is there much support for those ECUs? I need something that will be able to tune with quads for a good street/track set up.

I guess it depends, If your engine is taken from 98+ itr you would of had obd2b and from 96-98 you would of had obd2a....If you buy the hondata get the appropriate conversion harness (obd2a/b to obd1) and it should set you dead right.
It's nice to sound technical huh. Too bad none of the info you've given above means anything to the OP. It doesn't mean anything what car the motor was taken from...
As stated earlier, the car is OBD1 with a jumper harness to run the PFC. So getting an OBD1 S300 is what you're after.
LOL barefoot that's harsh... although I was wondering why I was feeling like there were conflicting messages coming through!
Thanks for clearing that up. I'll either order an OBD1 s300 which is quite a cost effective solution, or a motec if i can get a good price. Thanks guys!

lol, it's a big problem on this forum. everyone just giving out information with knowing the facts, it confuses people.
Since you're in Melbourne, try Andy @ AK Motorsports in the traders section, and give Neptune (seems very similar to S300) a go. With the current exchange rates being so crazy, he might be able to offer you something for a lot less.
I was considering that, but I don't know if i want to be stuck with a neptune dealer. Chasers motorworks here in Melbourne are offering me MoTeC M4 supplied, wired in and full tune for $3200. Seems like a pretty good deal to me! Good thing is the tuner (Paul) is a mechanical engineer and began his career as an engineer with MoTeC... so can't be a bad thing. If I bail out then i'll just go with an OBD1 S300 for about 1300+ tuning (2k all up roughly)

Cant go wrong with S300. We switched from hondata S200 to Vipec V44 plug and play and there was quite a difference. WOT is very similar, part throttle its a whole different story.

OK. barefootbonzai, I thought the b18cr is OBD2B. The car is OBD1.

Is that on the ITB equipped B20? Part throttle has improved a lot since my earlier tunes, but it could still do with a little bit or work.
My main gripe at the moment is fuel consumption, and really most of these ECUs are probably capable of delivering good fuel economy, but it's just finding a tuner who understands the set up and how to tune the ECU accordingly...

Neptune supplied and tuned will be about half the cost of the Motec. And it will give you a good result with Andy tuning. He has tuned a number of quads setups.

Yeap B20 with ITB's. Fuel consumption will depend on partial throttle. 02 sensor still in there?
o2 sensor is still in place. Next Wednesday the car is going in to chasers motorworks for installation and tuning of MoTeC m400. After much research I decided I didn't want a hacked ECU, and that I want something capable of advanced data logging for trackwork, which motec is renowned for. We'll be having one map for street focusing on economy and one map with race exhaust focusing on power and response. Paul worked as an engineer with Motec for almost 10 years and has many years experience tuning race cars in Asia and road cars here. Recently he tuned a b18c running to near 10,000rpm...
It will be interesting to see what he can do with it.
