Hi all,

I was teaching my brother to drive manual in my DC5R and have discovered a new very obvious (ticking/clunking/whining) sound coming from the engine. As if something is loose and rattling around. It'd be much appreciated if you could assist in identifying the sound.

He put my car through the usual wear & tear of learning to drive manual including:

- stalling several times
- heavy jerk on launch (3 occasions)
- attempted to start engine in gear (2 occasions)

Symptoms of broken mounts?

I should also mention that the car is equipped with Mugen engine mounts and Ingalls torque dampener, if that's at all relevant.

Much appreciated guys

I noticed that in the car I was learning to drive in too, but after travelling at faster speeds for a while it went away. So it maybe the engines working too much in low gears and low speeds or something like that..

My apologies, failed to mention. Will start hearing the sound when you give it a good rev (to say 4k) and lift off the accelerator WITH LOAD. Sometimes, it'll rattle whilst revving with and without load.

When stopped, it's mildly audible. When i press on the brake and turn the headlights on, it's also mildly audible

Is there any other self-diagnostic tests that I can do to narrow it down?

check whether the sound goes away with clutch depressed/ engaged, most cases it's a gearbox bearing issue.

I was gonna say just like Shadou said above^^ more than likely its a gearbox issue (clutch, Differential, Lack of oil) however these types of noises have been known to come from the front wheel bearings also, make sure to check for play on the front wheel hubs!

doubt it, wheel bearings won't go that easily, unless he mounted a kerb at speed.
We need a lot more info in regards, but your safest bet is to bring it in that way you'll get a diagnosis rather than a speculated internet suggestion.

so true lol.
I have a very noticable rattle which was caused by broken/loose mount. It may be nothing and just something on ur concience because ur bro drove the car or it many be something loose or broken, hard to tell unless someone inspects. I would get it checked by a professional to be sure.

Update, the sound is very prominent once I hit 4k, even more so when holding the revs there.

Thanks for your help guys, i'll get Hanny's to look at it at the next service (8,000 to go)

I would recommend you check it out asap in case something has come loose and is making said noise, 8000km with something loose in the engine/gearbox usually ends in a bad way... just my 2cents
