Have done 14500km I am due for the 10000km checkup.

Need the engine oil replaced from what I can see in the manual.

The manual says that I need this range of engine oil, but I really don't know which is best for the automatic.

any recommendations and brands for the engine oil?

Should I just pay someone to just replace the engine oil or do the full tune aka check. (I know I don't need Honda to service it, but can any mechanic do it without voiding the warranty?)

agree, do it at honda as it is still new, and its true that honda oil are not bad at all, its been said that honda oil is capable of daily driving plus a few track days between oil change (in japan) but i really dunno if its the same in australia... i have a 09 civic and will be taking it back to honda for service every 10000km and DIY oil change again every 5000km

Guys, just want to know if this is normal. I've searched the forum quite a bit but found nothing on this so bear with me if it has been discussed before.

Just had my 6mth 10k servicing today at a Honda service centre. I had one of those Honda vouchers for free servicing and the cost was covered today, with $0 out of pocket. At the end of the service, the customer rep was explaining to me what was done and so forth, and i casually asked what type of engine oil was used and they mentioned "semi-synthetic" and that this was the only type that they used.

I would have imagined that the engine oils to be used in newer cars are mostly synthetic?

No, Honda engine oil spec calls for mineral. But you can use semi or full synthetic instead if you wanted to as long they are the correct viscosity and exceeds the Honda mineral oil performance.

spoke to a honda specialist today, and i was told to use honda oil for 1000km and 5000km service, and then change to fully synthetic from 10000km on... reason being, honda oil is mineral based and is good for running in a new engine, after that, fully synthetic is better for the piston rings and other internal parts of the engine, and of coz, the engine will run smoother and it'll giv out better performance too.

didn't even service my car at 5k.. which was surprising to me that Honda didn't recommend this because my previous toyota had a servicing at 5k..

Hi guys,

I've got my 10,000KM service due tomorrow and the lady from the service centre called today to ask me if I would like to upgrade to the higher grade 4 synthetic oil?

Reading the above posts I assume this should be OK and I should tell them to put the higher grade synthetic oil??

Any thoughts?

Ok I just got a quote from two different dealerships.

My original dealer where I purchased the car quoted $294 with no mention of the oil so it would be extra...

The dealer I've booked with has quoted $220 for standard service OR $270 with oil upgrade to full synthetic.

Looks like I'm going with dealer that's close to home with the oil upgrade but if anyone thinks that the higher grade oil is not worth the extra $50 please let me know..

Thanks!

BYO oil!Just go to supercheap,Repco etc.and buy a full synthetic oil,5W-30 or 5W-40 then tell service you want them to use your own oil and to take it off the bill(usually $40.00 off!!)

Thanks for this advice. I'll remember to do that next time. Although the oil they put doesn't really cost that much, I think. It's mostly the labour charge that gets you.

Cheers anyhow :)

how do u know whether the fully synthetic oil is used instead of the mineral one if we upgrade it????

i went to a honda dealer once for service. 5000km after service I found out that they didnt change the oil nor the filter (the oil was way dirtier and thicker than being used after 5000km). Also, the aftermarket oil filter before the service was still on the car after the service of which they were supposed to change it.

Honda service uses a lot of contract mechanics instead of employing them full time. These contract mechanics also have to bring in the own tools. Plus, they are not trained specifically to deal with honda car.

Yeah this is a good question. I'd like to know the answer to this too.
Is there an easy way we can tell whether the oil is now fully synthetic? Like if we take a sample and check it. Colour, thickness etc?

Sorry to hear about your experience Zimp. That's shocking. You should put in a formal complaint to Honda HQ.

Dealers don't do oil change on the first service (5000 km). Not only Honda. I used to own new mitsubishi. Took it for the first service, they just inspect it. Less than 30 mins job.

DIY oil change may void your warranty. I hate new cars because of that. Pretty much have to lock in to dealer's service, to avoid warranty trouble.

Hmmm... not without a lab test.

Ok I discovered yesterday that the dealer put the left over oil in the boot of my car! I couldn't drop off pick up due to work so I just found it over the weekend.

The oil they've used is

REPSOL Elite
Multivalvulas
10W40

Is this the Honda oil that people have been talking about??
I thought Honda would have their own label etc on it?

It doesn't have much info on the back, it just says that it's for high performance and diesel engines. Doesn't even state that it is full sythetic...
