Anyone here been through pits with coilovers?

mate, im not entirely sure.

For one the car would abviously have to be legal heigh (100mm to lowest point). However i am not sure about the legalities of haveing aftermarket suspension ? may need to be ADR (australian designer Rules) approved ? maybe that may go for other aftermarket suspension components. ie.. control arms, camber kits, sway bars.

Either way just take the car through see what they say and change what you need to get it sorted out. Be sure to let us know here.

Ive got my car as leagal as i can. I have the 100mm clearance 4sure.

However im woundering the same question with my Buddyclub N+.
I also need to sort some brackets or somthing for my front brakes lines. They cable tied to the fork atm...

anyone else know ?

then again some inspectors r lazy, while some are very picky(we've had one of our bmw's go in on 2 diff occasions, once the guy looked at it, laughed,(looked dead stock) and signed it off, the next time guy another guy was a prick, went over every little thing on it so it really depends... try to make them look as stock as possible if u can

i've gone through a few times with buddyclub N+ and zip tied the brake lines to the fork and passed, but i think it does depend who you get....this is in ACT also.

i got buddy club racing spec damper with brake lines zip tied on and been to the pits a few times. all i had to do was set to legal height and paint a white line down the coil-overs; a straight line that goes over the two lock nuts and the thread.

i suppose its to make sure u dont lower it again. if the lock nuts move, the line will be broken. thats the only reason i can see

Sorry i didn't update,

I had the coilovers wound up so it looked to be a reasonable hight with some stocko rims and i was fine, but in saying that, the defect check guy was pretty chill, we chatted for like 15 minutes about crap before he went over the car.

I duno how im going to get stocko rims. I can borrow my mates 17s that have new tread on them...

And i really dont want to paint my Coilovers as im sure ill lower it again...

I can't remember which one i went to, it was north f brisbane by about two hours.

i had no other mods on it, i had put it back to stock, they didn't really thoroughly check it but that may have been luck. My coilovers have special brake line clip things in em.

I have some stock lancer rims. :P with no tread so if your stud pattern is 4x100 and got some tyres you can pop on for the day you could borrow em. lol.

The biggest tip i can give you is chat to the inspector, don't get personal but ask him if he has had a good day, you know the drill, i did that and my checker dude got quite comfortable and what to me seemed "relaxed".

I know there is a inspection place on the sunny coast somewhere. Sounds like u went there. I think ill be heading to the one at zillmier.

Yeah my engine bay will be stock. My only real mod is the coilovers.
And being N+'s they are on with zip ties atm... Ill work on a bracket this weekend.

Thanks for the offer about the wheels man :) I would take it however i dont have any better rubber to stick on them....Is the tred really that low ? Past or near the marker ? Cos I guess thats one big thing they would check on. I guess u were just lucky :P

I got randomly pulled over afew weeks ago on the southside.
I got done for my CF bonnet, bucket seat without a mod plate and my over all ride height.

I have to go to court next week about it... I think cos the CF and bucket seat are 'really dangerous mods' Its bullsh1t

^^^ u do realise that those defects were only handed out for ur safety and others.

CF shatters like glass on impact. it provides no crumple cushioning, so ur chances of survival in the event of a crash will be greatly reduced. plus, the sharp fragments can be sent flying into innocent ppl and will most likely reach u in the cabin too.

as for the bucket seat, same story, its for ur safety. i know its BS that some crappy seats bought from autobarn are ADR approved while reputable brands like Bride arent

ppl modify their cars full knowing the risk of their modifications, but it seems like u dont. im not having a go at u but ur quick to blame the cops for doing their job which is ultimately for ur personal well being. call it bullsh!t if u want but atleast be mature enough to see the logic behind it

hmm i got defected for SSCUS recaro style seats about 2 years ago. I didn't have to go to court. Actually I told the mechanic who did the road worthy they were stock seats, he beleived me, gave me the roadworthy sheet. and then drove it to the pits at vic roads, he said nothing and all was good :P maybe i got lucky...or maybe its different because yours was a one peice?? who knows.

Yes thanks NSPYRE I am aware of why the CF bonnet and seats are illegal. I understand I was talking a gamble with my safety and a gamble with the cops. As im sure u were also aware with ur cf bonnet..

I just think the police could be doing more important things with their time.

i have a fiberglass bonnet and been over the pits they didnt care they said long as it has the factory ribbing as it dose then its ok, and my bother has the CF bonnet and has the ribbing under it was fine through the pits as well?

mabe its caz they no me at the pits they know my car and me by name now i have been defected so many times :o

Im pretty sure my bonnet has 'rubbing'. I dont really care wat the inspection pplz think about the bonnet. I have the OEM for the test. Its the Police that decide if its illegal or not. And the cop who did me knew he was going too bust me even be4 he lifted the bonnet.

In the ACT, apparently there are new rules for coilovers, in order to get the engineers cert the height needs to be set at legal height, then the nuts are drilled and a cable tie or bolt is put through it and the whole shock is sprayed black. however, i think this might be a bit excessive. the white line thing sounds alot better.

yep.... my inspection is tuesday next week. Fark its been a bitch trying to find steelies that fit with good rubber. Spent two arvos at tyre shops and wreckers getting 2nd hand rubber.....

i got defected for a heap of things but they pick one that they want to charge you with which in my case was

first time POD filter.... was easy to get off as the police buggered them self up saying i needed a noise certificate ans i had one so the judge let me off.

second time for being 80mm i said the cop never measured my car with any kind of measuing device and got off agian i have to go back agian for pod and bov in july have all my evidence up so 3 times lucky hopfuly

it just takes some looking through the legistation and you can find loop holes for everything :P

if your car is before a 94 model you are allowed to have what eva tint you like on the car i have the paper work on it here somewhere

I went for my inspection this arvo. PASSED! so glad....
I thought I would give a play by play. Might help someone in the same situation and also let people know what to expect if they pulled over and handed a defect notice.

Just a bit of back ground.
Stuff I did to my poor car to make sure I would pass
-Stuck my standard seats and gear knob back in lol
-Fixed the high rise brake light on the boot hatch. (Since I removed the OEM VTI-R wing)
-Raised my car above 100mm ( doable thx to the buddyclub N+)
-Installed my standard Cat back system. (Still had my OEM header in)
-Fabricated some brackets for my front brake lines.( More legal then zip ties. My fitter n turner mate helped me, will post my design later)
-Replaced my front brake pads. Cos they were getting abit thin...
-Reset my SRS system to stop the SRS warning light on my dash.
-De-tinted my back hatch and door windows (Had illegal dark as tint installed when I first got the car)
-Uninstalled my USM front indicators and installed clear indicator bulbs (Think its illegal to have orange lights facing forward)
-Hunted down some stocko OEM teg blade rims and fitted some 2nd hand and legal rubber. (Cost: $45 a tyre) and,
-filled up my windscreen washer water bottle. ( critical lol)

That all might sound like a bit of over kill, however wanted to cover all bases. I didn’t want to drive my car in this stage for another month just to pay another $92 to have it inspected again. For example the window tint costs about $60 a window. And to book a 2nd inspection would cost me $100... so why risk it ? (However I had my window down the entire inspection, and I may have got a way with it.)

INSPECTION TIME!
I went to Zillmere Department of Transport. On the northside of Brizvegus.
First up they directed my front wheels onto a rolling road or dyno (Was like wff). It then began to spin my front wheels. I was then told to apply the brakes. I kinda did it at normal speed. However I suggest doing it as hard as you can to improve your score. They have a computer booth that shows all the results and all the info for your car I guess.

You then stick your back wheels on and also test your hand brake...
RESULTS: He said my back brakes were a bit low. They were only working at 45% or some shit he said. He also said my handbrake was weak and after looking at the leaver in the cabin said it should be adjusted so it doesn’t pull so high... (Got me a bit worried)

Next he directed me over a long thin pit. On the edge of the pit is a skirting. 100mm I’m guessing. So if you’re too low it would scrape entering the pit. However I cleared it fine.
When he was under my car he told me to move the steering side to side...checking steering maybe? Not 2 sure.

I then moved off the pit and proceeded to pop the bonnet. He had a little look around. (It's pretty much stock under my hood atm, just a red cover and blue leads xD!) All seemed fine.

He then asked me to test my lights. The standard hi/low beam, indicators and brake lights. Oh and dont forget the horn. He then opened the passenger door and had a look around inside. He didn’t look twice at my gauges.

He had one final walk around my car and then told me to get out and wait outside. He also asked me if I planned on sticking my old mods back on, and if I’m going to adjust the suspension "I’m not stupid " he said :P I told a lil white lie :P

He popped out a bit later and told me I had passed.
I asked if there was any documentation I could have to say I passed. He said I wouldn’t need it and that it will be all fixed up on the computer system.


Sooo that's that.
Hope you all don’t have to visit the place I just tried to describe.
My car is basic and nothing special. However it was quite a pain and cost me a good few hundred of dollars to get it up 2 scratch. I can only wish highly modified Hondas the best of luck.

ummm i dint pass. i still have to do some stupid noise test. they said my exhaust was too loud as i no longer have my standard exhaust anymore. had it checked and is 92dB but the legal limit is 90dB. so i have to change my exhaust and have it tested again to pass. so stupid.

Protip.
Get a blank flange the size of your axleback flang cut.
Get a 1.5" hole drilled in the centre.
Put inbetween bpipe and axle back for the test.
Car will be alot quiter because it can only go through a 1.5" hole in that section.

I guy at work got defected in his HILUX this morning. I was under the impression that fourbies never got in trouble.( thus every1 telling me to get one). But yes he got fined $100 and 1 point! for having blue LEDS in his head lights.

yeah was just a normal defect. If you cop the fine on the day its no court. But if ur done for ride height its a court date and an inspection :(
